2008 May Commencement

Ferris State University awarded 1,300 graduates diplomas at the
May 9 and 10 Commencement cermonies.

On May 9, at the College of Pharmacy, College of Arts & Sciences and College of Professional and Technological Studies ceremony, Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick received an Honorary Doctorate of Public Service.

Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick was born and raised in Detroit. Congresswoman Kilpatrick earned the first of her three college degrees at Ferris State University. In 1978, she was elected to the Michigan State House. She served there for 18 years before seeking national office and was the first African-American woman to sit on the Michigan House Appropriations Committee.

On May 10, at the College of Business ceremony, John Hare received an Honoary Doctorate of Business and Industry.

John Hare a Detroit area native, graduated from Ferris State University with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing degree.

Hare began his broadcasting career in 1969 as an account executive with KXYZ AM/FM. In 1980, he became vice president and general manager of WRIF-FM in Detroit. In 1986, he was promoted to president and general manager of WBAP-AM in Dallas-Fort Worth. In 1996, he was promoted to president and general manager of KSCS-FM, Dallas-Fort Worth, and assumed managerial responsibility for the company's stations in Detroit. The National Radio Hall of Fame inductee retired from the Walt Disney Company in December 2007.
