STRUCTURED LEARNING ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (SLA)

Developed at Ferris in 1993, Structured Learning Assistance is a free academic support program that assists students to succeed in challenging and high-risk-for-failure University courses. SLA courses contain workshops held outside the lecture period, typically 2-3 hours per week. Qualified paraprofessionals attend the lectures and then create and facilitate the workshop sessions utilizing a mix of methods to enhance learning of the subject matter. Such activities include reviewing and clarifying the professor’s lectures; learning how to take effective lecture notes, read the textbook, or use study guides, practice tests and quizzes; improving study skills and test taking skills; reducing anxiety; and assisting with homework. Students who utilize SLA support experience pass rates 10 percent to 35 percent higher than those students who did not take the class with an SLA workshop. Students sign-up for these SLA courses when they register for classes each semester and the SLA workshop times are automatically inserted into their class schedule. Mandatory attendance is required at these workshops until the course grade is established and also when a grade in the class falls below the cut-off point determined by the professor (anywhere from a 2.0 to 3.0 grade), but students are always welcome and encouraged to attend even if they are passing the course. For further information, please contact the SLA program office at (231)591-5947 or log on to http://www.ferris.edu/sla/.
