Motorcycle RiderCourse
Visit the Secretary of State website for a listing of other organizations that offer rider safety courses or third party testing:
Ferris State University offers three different levels of the Motorcycle RiderCourse.
Basic RiderCourse® (BRC)
The BRC course is the foundation course required of all riders 17 years of age and younger and anyone 18 and over who does not pass the Secretary of State riding skills test on their second attempt. The 16 to 18 hour training program includes both classroom and "hands-on" riding instruction. Designed for a maximum of 12 riders, the course schedule includes roughly 4 to 6 hours of classroom instruction that prepares students for 10 to 12 hours of practical riding in a controlled, off-street environment (typically a parking lot). If you want to learn to ride, or are an experienced rider who has never received formal instruction, this is the course for you. Michigan residents who have reached their 15th birthday as of the date of the course are eligible to enroll. The ability to balance and ride a bicycle is expected. Persons under eighteen years of age need the written consent of a parent or legal guardian. Participants must attend all sessions and pass both a written and a riding test to successfully complete the course. Course fee is $25.00 and includes a motorcycle to ride. Participants are to bring their own riding gear.
The Basic RiderCourse begins promptly on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and runs to 10:00 p.m. that evening. Instruction continues on both Saturday and Sunday, beginning promptly at 8:00 a.m. until about 5:00 p.m. Not being present and ready to begin on time may result in your "slot" being awarded to individuals on "stand-by" status.
Experienced-License Waiver RiderCourse (ERC-LW)
The ERC-License Waiver course is designed for the experienced but unlicensed rider who wants to increase knowledge and skill on their own motorcycle. An advanced level of clutch control, counter-steering, balance and counter-weighting, and braking are skills expected of ERC-LW participants. Participants use their own motorcycles, which must be in mechanically sound condition. The course is approximately 8 hours in length and includes both classroom and "hands on" instruction. ERC-LW courses are usually scheduled on Sundays. Successful completion allows the participant to apply for his/her motorcycle endorsement. A valid Michigan Driver License is required. Participants are to bring their own riding gear. Course fee is $25.
Experienced-Skills Practice RiderCourse (ERC-SP)
The ERC-SP RiderCourse is designed for the experienced rider who wants to increase knowledge and skill on their own motorcycle. Emphasis is placed on advanced riding skills and handling emergency situations. If you have not completed a Basic RiderCourse or have never taken formal instructions, you may wish to consider that option before taking the ERC-SP RiderCourse. An advanced level of clutch control, counter-steering, balance and counter-weighting, and braking are skills expected of ERC-SP participants. Participants use their own motorcycles, which must be in mechanically sound condition. The course is 6-8 hours in length and is primarily riding but with some short content discussion sessions. The ERC-SP RiderCourse® is usually scheduled on Saturday. This course is limited to those who have completed a Motorcycle RiderCourse-Riding and Street Skills or a Basic RiderCourse® and have at least six months riding experience, or those riders with over 12,000 miles riding time who are confident they possess the riding skills noted above. A valid Michigan Driver License with a motorcycle endorsement is required. Participants are to bring their own riding gear. Course fee is $100.
