Education

Master Degree from Ferris State University in Career and Technical Education, 2007

Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Purdue University, 1980

Professional Teaching Experience

Associate Professor in the HVACR department of the College of Technology at Ferris State University, I have taught junior and senior level HVAC system design for commercial buildings. My courses include secondary hydronic system design and commercial air side system design; additionally, I have taught the senior capstone design class since my arrival at campus in fall of 2003 where seven (7) different student groups have been recognized by ASHRAE in the annual international student competition. I have also been a speaker at ASHRAE, ARI, MEAC, and Lily workshops around the country on HVAC system fundamentals and educational experiences. I am co-advisor to the student ASHRAE organization at Ferris State University and work closely with all students for summer internships and employment opportunities after graduation.

University Experience

I chaired the Energy Committee which created the first “Michigan Energy Conference” at Ferris in the spring of 2008 and continue to chair this committee for future initiatives in energy related events, curriculum, and growth. I have served two years on the Distinguished Teacher Award Committee. I served on the committee to create certification for online teaching at Ferris. I represent Ferris within West Michigan ASHRAE as a board member and chair; plus, I have been appointed to Region 5 Student Activities Chair for ASHRAE.

Professional HVAC Experience

Prior to teaching, I held several positions within the HVAC community in the Metro Detroit area for about 23 years. These positions include over 18 years as a commercial/industrial Trane salesman where my primary clients included Ford Motor Company, industrial contractors (example; Durr Industries), professional design firms (example; Ghafari Associates), construction managers (example; Barton Malow), and other firms within the HVAC industry. I also worked for a design-build mechanical contractor for over 2 years doing design-build mechanical work in the automotive plants (process and human comfort). I worked for one year as the Vice President of EPPA-Strand custom air handling before they filed for bankruptcy. I also was part owner in a design-consulting firm for over 6 years that did private mechanical/HVAC work in the industrial market of Metro Detroit. The combinations of the above experiences bring real world application to my teaching at Ferris State University.

Unique Experiences

I have transitioned three different HVAC courses to web-based learning and continue to teach via web-based learning to students from Southern California to Massachusetts. I was one of nine high school graduates in 1975 vying for two nominations to the Air Force Academy from the State of Indiana (the vision in my right eye prevented my nomination).
