College of Pharmacy Implements New Curriculum

In order to meet and exceed the newly-approved accreditation standards issued by ACPE, the College of Pharmacy initiated a task force to make recommendations to change the current Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum.

Assembled in June 2006, the Curriculum Revision Task  Force has completed more than 600 hours of deliberation on the curriculum. The Task Force’s charge was to try to balance the didactic portion of the curriculum (including the pre–pharmacy component) to allow for no net increase in credit hours.

Input into revising the curriculum was received from the Pharmacy Alumni Board and the Pharmacy Advisory Committee, including comments on early and advanced experiential, practice skills (e.g. communications, pharmacist documentation), scientific foundations and professional behavior of students.

With the newly-revised curriculum, the College of Pharmacy will no longer offer an accelerated program where students can finish in less than four years. The program will take them the full four years.  Implementation is expected for Fall 2009.

Members on the Task Force include Co–Chairs Dr. Elsie Lovsted and Dr. Cambria DeHoag, Dr. Gregg Potter, Dr. Curtis Smith, Dr. Mary Frances Ross, Dr. Greg Wellman, Dr. Steve Durst, Dr. Eric Jarvi, Diane Miller (alumna) and Heather Graham (Pharm.D. candidate). For more information on the revised curriculum contact DeHoag at (616) 233-6552 or dehoagc@ferris.edu.
