2007-08 College of Pharmacy
Application
|
|
The application deadline is January 31, 2008. It is expected
that applicants will have completed all first-year courses and at least the
first semester of courses normally taken the second year by the deadline.
Most importantly, three-quarters of the chemistry and two-thirds of the biology/microbiology
prerequisites need to be successfully completed prior to this date.
Students should ascertain the availability of remaining pre-pharmacy
courses prior to making application.
Official transcripts for all completed
academic work must be requested and postmarked prior to January
31 (it is highly recommended that a receipt is obtained). Fall of 2007
grades should be submitted as soon as possible
after the courses have been completed and official grades posted.
|
|
Applicants are also required to take the
Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT) between June 2007 and the end of
January 2008, and have their scores reported directly to the College of
Pharmacy (Ferris code: 0028) by The Psychological Corporation. The PCAT is a
specialized test which helps identify qualified applicants to pharmacy
colleges by measuring the general academic ability and scientific knowledge
necessary for the commencement of pharmaceutical care. Applicants must have
a 50th percentile or higher on the composite score to be eligible to
apply. The test will be offered in June, August, October, and January.
Taking the October test should provide an opportunity to receive a
score report prior to the following January 31 application deadline date.
The January test is recommended for students in the second semester of
their sophomore year. Application to take the PCAT must be made
approximately one month in advance. General information and information
concerning the dates, times and locations of the test can be obtained from
the College of Pharmacy or by writing Pharmacy College Admission Test, The
Psychological Corporation, 555 Academic Court, San Antonio, TX 78204-2498; http://www.pcatweb.info,
Telephone 1-800-622-3231, or Fax 210-921-8861.

The evaluation of candidates will take
into consideration (1) the completion of the required pre-pharmacy courses,
(2) academic performance in all pre-pharmacy courses with extra
consideration given to the grades obtained in chemistry, biology, and
mathematics, and (3) performance on the PCAT. Other factors that may be
considered include motivation for the study and practice of pharmacy and
demonstration of communication skills that could include documentation of
pharmacy practice experience, preparation of a writing sample, and
participation in an interview.
IMPORTANT: When filling out the
application, use official grade records from the institution where you
earned those credits. Do not rely on a summary of your credits
reported by another institution. Report EXACTLY the courses and
grades as they appear on the official reports. Do not round grades
up/down. Do not report honor points (i.e., grade times credits)
instead of grades. Use a 4.0 scale with semester credits (Canadians do
not need to convert to the U.S. scale, however). Do not report partial
grades (i.e., your current grade in a course you haven't
completed, yet). Failure to follow these directions will result in
penalties or disqualification.
|
|
The student assumes all responsibility for
providing the University with the required records for evaluation within
the established timelines. Processing of applications cannot proceed
without the necessary documentation.
|
|
Successful applicants will be notified in
April of their admission status. Admission may be conditional pending the
successful completion of all pre-pharmacy requirements. Acknowledgment of
the applicant’s acceptance or rejection of the admission must be made in
writing within 14 days after the effective date on the letter.
|
|
Enrollment information will be provided in
May and will include orientation and registration dates. Deposits, in
accordance with University and College policies, will be required.

Important Notices
Criminal Background Checks/Drug Testing
Successful applicants must conform to
college's affiliate requirements for all experiential coursework within the
doctor of pharmacy curriculum. This may include but is not limited to
periodic criminal background evaluations and drug testing. Those with
a criminal/drug history may not be able to complete the program if our
affiliate sites refuse to accept them into their facilities. Also,
obtaining and maintaining a pharmacy intern license from the Michigan State
Board of Pharmacy is a requirement. Dismissal from the program may
ultimately be the result if one is unable to complete the experiential component
of the program due to a criminal history, positive drug test, or failure to
obtain/maintain a pharmacy intern license.
Communications
If it is determined that you are unable to
communicate in English adequately enough to pass oral assignments (e.g.,
presentations, patient interviews) a remediation plan may be offered by the
college. Although optional, completing a remediation plan is strongly
encouraged as students may fail courses based upon their communication
abilities alone. Any costs associated with a plan may be the sole
responsibility of the student. If the problem is severe enough, the
student may be temporarily withdrawn from the pharmacy program and asked to
participate in an intense remediation program.
Off-Campus Curriculum
Applicants should be aware that the
pharmacy curriculum is split between the Big Rapids campus and other sites
throughout the state. The first four semesters are in Big Rapids, and
the next two are in either Grand Rapids or Kalamazoo. The last two semesters
consists of practice rotations that are located throughout the state, but
centered around Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Lansing. Students are
responsible for securing their own housing and transportation.
