MATH
COLLOQUIUM, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 08,
SPEAKER: Michael Dekker,
Harvey Hanna, Holly Schalk, and Kent Sun,
Mathematics Department,
TITLE: A Discussion on Collaborative Testing.
Abstract: In the winter semester of 2006, the two
instructors for math 251 (Statistics for the Life Sciences) gave common night
exams in an attempt to discourage cheating and to eliminate the variation in
grades due to differences in tests and partial-credit grading. This experiment was repeated by the three
instructors for math 135 (Calculus for the Life Sciences) the following
semester. We will discuss the details in implementing common night exams and
what we and the students perceive as the benefits and detractions of having
them.
