Applied Speech Communication

Speech communication is a broad and dynamic field of study. Students pursuing an associate of arts degree take foundational courses in public presentation, group dynamics and interpersonal communication. In addition, they are required to take coursework in communication theory as well as argumentation and debate. Once they have completed these core courses, students may then choose six hours of electives that are particularly suited to their individual interests. These include courses in conflict resolution, family communication, gender communication, organizational communication, persuasion and persuasive speaking, interviewing, human relations, nonverbal communication, broadcast presentation, broadcast writing, technical and professional presentation, intercultural communication, and leadership.
