10th Grade Goals

  1. Review of 9th grade research expectations
  2. Research concepts presented:
    1. Hypothesis construction
    2. Formal hypothesis testing (null vs. alternative)
    3. Independent vs. dependent variables
    4. Controlling variables
    5. Student t-tests
    6. Regression analysis
    7. Correlation coefficient
  3. Computerized literature search/ telecommunications skill development.
  4. Interviewing techniques/protocol
  5. Informal resume/logs, writing grant proposals, applying for summer educational opportunities
  6. Research project:
    1. Each student will complete a one-semester chemistry/computer library or laboratory investigation.
    2. Each investigation will be written up according to specific guidelines and turned in for evaluation.
    3. Each student will be expected to present a short description of his or her research investigation to there class.
    4. Each student will present a poster presentation of their project and field questions from guests.
  7. Introduction to science fair competitions
  8. Completed student outcome expectations and an abstract of their investigation will be recorded in their portfolio.
  9. Evaluation/Credit/ Comprehensive Exam. Students will be evaluated on the design and presentation of their research projects at each grade level plus a test of content presented. For credit a comprehensive test will be given at the end of the 11th grade and pass/fail credit will be assigned.
