The Biological Sciences Institute is an outreach initiative of the department of biological
sciences to establish educational partnerships with high school biology teachers in Michigan.

Short courses, conferences and lab workshops throughout the year bring high school teachers
and students to our campus, and introduce them to such areas as biotechnology, anatomy, botany, and microbiology.
During the past three years the institute offered a total of 16 workshops to over 275 students and
teachers from over 50 different schools in Michigan.
The activities of the institute are bringing a greater awareness of the expanding career opportunities
in biology, especially biotechnology. They are also helping school teachers with learning new techniques
for teaching biology labs and sponsoring student research projects.
