High School Students Explore Careers
at Ferris State’s aCADemy
The
University’s CAD and Manufacturing aCADemy is a hands-on program
designed to encourage students in grades 9 through 11 to explore careers
in the manufacturing sector. A total of 31 Michigan high-school students
attended last summer.
The
students learned 3-D solid modeling to design tools and a model dragster,
then rapid-prototyped their racecar designs and tested them in the Mechanical
Engineering Department’s wind tunnel. Participants also learned
how welding aids in the manufacturing of products, and how plastic components
are produced using a variety of processes. Team-building and problem-solving
skills were developed on Ferris State’s ropes course.
Other
activities included building pop bottle rockets, and in the Manufacturing
Tooling portion students programmed CNC machines and used a variety
of equipment to produce small parts.
Several
students received scholarships through Ferris’ Tech Prep Partnership
as well as through their home schools.
