The
Honors program requires that a student join a club, perform community
service and assume a leadership position at the University. That was no
problem for Bucharest, Romania native Mircea (Miguel) Dobre. Dobre belonged
to the Student Alumni Gold Club, Omicron Delta Kappa Honors Society and
the Finance and Investment Clubs. He volunteered with a number of organizations
including the North American Food Drive, Adopt-A-Highway, American Youth
Soccer Organization and the Conversation Partner Program.
Now,
a little more than a year after graduating, Dobre is volunteering again,
organizing a Ferris State Honors Alumni Association.
“I
really hope this is going to be an active body and not just something
where people drag themselves from meeting to meeting,” Dobre says.
“That’s not really in the spirit of those of us who were in
Honors.”
Now
a financial advisor for Robert W. Baird Inc., Dobre is working, to paraphrase
Robert Frost, to unite his vocation and his avocation. Dobre, along with
Baird, helped sponsor a reception for current and former Honors students
at Homecoming this last October.
“We
had a room at the Holiday Inn during the All-Student, All-Alumni Homecoming
dance reception. We had a DJ, cash bar and plenty of good food. It was
a lot of fun,” says Dobre. He adds, in true Honors spirit, “Apart
from the fun and games, I hope we’re going to be able to support
the school and do good things for our alma mater.”
Maybe
because Dobre and others from Honors are still close to their University
experience, there isn’t the nostalgia for some golden age that older
alumni might feel.
“Honors
students graduating from Ferris State will make tremendous differences
in the industries they work in, whether that’s Pharmacy or Plastics
or whatever else,” Dobre says. “I think that will advance
the school and carry forward the Ferris name in years to come.”

early graduates of Honors embody a great range of interests. They
represent the Honors Program as a whole—a group of young scholars
who are, it’s fair to say, the cream of the crop. Click on
