BACK IN THE SADDLE
Tom Kirinovic, associate Athletics director at Ferris State since
1994, was appointed interim Athletics director in mid-July. Kirinovic
will oversee the Bulldogs' 15-sport intercollegiate Athletics program
while a national search for a permanent director is conducted. This
is Kirinovic's second stint as interim Athletics director; he previously
held the position between '93 and '94, following the retirement
of former athletics director Dean Davenport. Kirinovic, a 1977 Ferris
graduate, has been a member of FSU's Athletics staff for 17 years.
He succeeds Larry Marfise, who resigned in July to accept the position
of director of Athletics and Intramurals at the University of Tampa
(Fla.).
HOCKEY PROGRAM ADDS FAMILIAR FACE
Jeff Blashill, a volunteer assistant coach with the FSU men's ice
hockey program last season and a former Bulldog goaltender, was
named to an assistant coaching position in August. Blashill replaces
Jamie Russell, who accepted the top assistant coaching post at Cornell
University in June 1999 after serving as an assistant at Ferris
since 1994.
"Jeff is a great addition to our staff," said head coach Bob Daniels.
"He's a well-rounded individual and an excellent coach. It was tough
losing a coach the caliber of Jamie Russell, but we feel blessed
to have someone with Jeff's qualities to step right in."
A native of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Blashill left his mark in
the FSU hockey annals as evidenced by the four-year letterwinner
(1994-98) currently ranking fifth all-time in goals against average
(3.89) and sixth in total career saves (1,666).
ALUMUS JOINS COACHING STAFF
The FSU football program added Scott Redinger to its coaching staff
during the 1999 campaign as the Bulldogs' defensive line coach.
Redinger is no stranger to the program; he served as a graduate
assistant coach at Ferris from 1995-97. The 1997 FSU graduate joins
fellow Ferris alumni and current Bulldog coaches Jeff Pierce ('79)
and Dave Cox ('93).
LEAGUE COMINGS AND GOINGS
The Central Collegiate Hockey Association, of which FSU is a member,
will expand to 12 teams beginning with the 1999-2000 season with
the addition of the University of Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks. Subsequently,
the CCHA Tournament will expand to 10 teams. The first round will
be the best-of-three series (1 vs. 10, 2 vs. 9, etc.) at the site
of the higher seed. The two lowest remaining seeds will play a "play-in"
game on the Tuesday after, while the remaining four teams will advance
to the CCHA Championships at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Meanwhile,
Westminster College of New Wilmington, Pa., which is a current member
of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, plans to
leave both conferences and NCAA Divison II altogether at the conclusion
of the 1999-2000 campaign.
GROUND BROKEN FOR PGM LEARNING CENTER
The groundbreaking ceremony for the new FSU Professional Golf Management
Learning Center and Katke Golf Course Clubhouse was held Sept. 10.
When completed in June, 2000, the new facility will serve as a learning
laboratory for PGM students as well as attract more golfers to the
course.
DOMINANT IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT
The Women's Tennis team has sustained an amazing 133-conference
dual match winning streak for 15 years, since Sept. 14, 1984 when
FSU registered a 7-2 league triumph over Northwood. This year under
head coach Ed Luck, the women have won 15 consecutive GLIAC titles
and, with five remaining league matches, are 7-0 both overall and
in the conference.
MEN'S TENNIS ENJOY A FIRST
The Men's Tennis team performed well at the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association's Midwest Region Mid-American Tournament (Sept. 24-26)
in Indianapolis, Ind., winning their first-ever ITA Mid-American
doubles title.
