Letters to the Editor

Editor,

I read your recent article in the Crimson & Gold, "Dr. Barry Mehler on Eugenics, Ethics and Genetic Engineering" with interest. It was refreshing to read an article which explored the religious as well as scientific views on this timely story. Thank you for your unbiased reporting and courage to print something that is certain to raise the ire of some of your readers.

Editor,

I am a 1983 graduate of the School of Business at FSC. From time to time we get job postings within our company that I would like to pass on to the placement staff at FSU but do not know where to send them. The only two

e-mail addresses that I have are yours and the President's. Perhaps you could publish a list of relevant e-mail addresses in the Crimson & Gold from time to time so that alumni such as myself could communicate with FSU more frequently.

Also please try and present a better cross section of letters to the editor. The response from Laurie Beigstrom Badge in the December issue is a little too Family Values for my comfort level. Calvin College would be perfectly happy to receive a letter like hers. Don't forget what the S in FSU stands for. Keep up the good work; I enjoy the magazine no matter how misguided some of my fellow alumni are.

Employers who wish to recruit FSU graduates may post position openings and search resumes on the FSU web site www.ferris.edu. Click on "Career Services" (listed under "Other Services" on the home page), then "Employers."

An e-mail directory for faculty, staff, students and alumni is available on the FSU web site under "Alumni" on the home page. Alumni who would like their names included can e-mail Ted Halm, News Services Manager, at halmt@ferris.edu.

Editor,

I just received my December Crimson and Gold and couldn't believe the number of negative responses you received regarding Karen McDougal's story (Playmate of the Year). I thought one of the important facets of an education was being open-minded. When I read your story, I went through the Playboy magazine in which she was featured and thought her pictures showed a beautiful woman with a BRAIN. What's wrong with that? My husband and I subscribe to Playboy. I'm usually the first one that has a chance to read it! Maybe your article could have been more neutral, but, I for one was glad to see that your editors recognized personal achievement, in any endeavor one chooses.

Sincerely,
Judith A. Mersch

Editor,

Just read the "Reader Mail" in the December issue of Crimson & Gold ... you had the published comments coming and more ... the fact that the part-time non-grad was given so much coverage (no reference intended to the clothing or lack of same in the cover shot) [in the Sept.'98 issue] and Member of Congress Kilpatrick was given a single sentence was interesting. Even though Kilpatrick was covered in December, the difference in coverage is still of interest.

Your note to readers in December continues a trend toward drawing attention to non-academic areas of the college/university... a football player, a hockey player, a soap opera actor ? Hard to believe that Ferris has not had more of an impact on the world we live in!

Better luck next time.

This reader should enjoy our feature on Illinois Governor George Ryan in this issue.

Honor Roll Corrections

The Honor Roll published in the December 1998 issue of Crimson & Gold contained several typographical errors, including the omission of the symbol designating donors to the Ferris Foundation. We apologize to all who were affected by these errors. Your contributions to the University and the Foundation are greatly appreciated.

 Editor,

I just received my December issue of Crimson & Gold, and it's terrific! The "look" of the magazine and the content are outstanding, and if people aren't uplifted by it, nothing will help them. I get publications from other universities, so I do have some background for comparison. I like the diversity of alumni covered, the readability of the articles, and the good insight Crimson & Gold provides into what's going on at the University.

Editor,

As the field director for Morley Stanwood Elementary and Middle School Rocket Football, I would like to thank the athletics department for offering free FSU football tickets to our players, cheerleaders and coaches. In my discussions with our regional director, Walt Lodes, we both feel very fortunate that Ferris can be such a positive influence on the children of West Michigan. The program to have a Rocket Football Day has given many kids and their families the chance to see what a great campus and athletic facility we have right here in Mecosta County. College may be more of a reality to some of these children as a result of this experience.

I would also like to extend thanks for allowing Rocket Football players to use the Ferris football field. I would never be able to describe in words the look of the kids as they made their way into the stadium. The only word that comes to mind is "goosebumps"!

I am very proud to be a Ferris alumna. With all of the opportunities that have been made available to our local children, I can only hope many of them will take advantage of the wonderful education that Ferris has to offer. My own children are considering Ferris State University as their first choice to begin their college careers. I truly hope we will have another generation of Ferris alumni in our family.

Kim Trites, Field Director
