NEW DIGS!
FSU men's ice hockey program has a new 4,560-foot gross-square-foot locker
room at the Robert L. Ewigleben Ice Arena. The locker room annex, which
is attached to the Ice Arena's west side, is just a part of the multi-phase
Ice Arena Remodeling Project.
The first-class wing features a locker room with 30 individual lockers,
a coaches' office, stick room, equipment room, sauna, and a study lounge
along with rooms for sports medicine, film study, and exercise bikes.
PRE-SEASON POLL RANKS FSU
The MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings, which are administered by the College
Golf Foundation, has ranked FSU 10th in its preseason poll. The Bulldogs,
who are coached by Tom Underwood, tied Texas A&M-Commerce in the preseason
forecast. Ferris finished eighth at the 1998 NCAA Division II Championship
last May.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM ENJOYS RECORD WIN STREAK
The 1998-99 Ferris State women's hoop team has made Tracey Fisk's head coaching
debut a memorable one this season as the Bulldogs reeled off a school-record
11 consecutive victories.
TENNIS COACH COMES HOMEB
Paul Marcum, a former Bulldog All-American in men's tennis, was named the
program's 10th head coach in December. Marcum, who was selected both the
Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and Midwest Player-of-the-Year
in 1991, had served as co-director of the tennis program at the Suntree
Country Club in Melbourne, Fla., since 1997. |
FOOTBALL TEAM BREAKS RECORD
1998 was a record-breaking campaign for the FSU football program as the
Bulldogs set or tied 40 various team and individual records. Individually,
junior kicker-punter Doc Proctor of Big Rapids and junior tailback Mo Harris
received post-season All-America Honorable Mention accolades by Don Hansen's
Football Gazette.
Proctor, who along with Harris were all-Midwest Intercollegiate Football
Conference First-Team picks, was selected to the Daktronics, Inc. All-America
Northeast Region First Team.

A Winning Tradition
After each game, win or lose, FSU hockey players
line up and salute the fans.
TENNIS TEAMS EARN
NATIONAL BILLING
Both the Ferris women's and men's tennis programs continue to excel, and
the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has recognized their accomplishments.
In the ITA's NCAA Division II Fall National Team Rankings which were released
in mid-December, the Bulldog women's team is ranked 18th nationally and
fifth in the Midwest Region.
The women's squad captured its 15th consecutive GLIAC title in the fall
while extending its current conference dual-match winning streak to 126
straight. Seventh-year head coach Ed Luck was voted the GLIAC's 1998 "Coach
of the Year." |
The men's team is ranked eighth in the ITA's Midwest Region preseason
rankings while sophomore Martin Krbec is rated 16th among the nation's top
singles players.
WAITS SCORES 1,000 POINTS
Senior forward Ray Waits of the FSU men's basketball team became the 21st
player in the program's 70-year history to score 1,000 career points when
he reached the milestone against Lynn (Fla.) University on Dec. 12. He was
named the GLIAC's Player-of-the-Week for his performance in the Lynn University
Pepsi Classic in Boca Raton, Fla.
OUTDOOR MEET
CELEBRATES NEW TRACK
On April 10, the FSU women's track program hosts the first outdoor meet
held at FSU in more than a decade. Head coach Jeff Kavalunas is hosting
the Bulldog Invitational, competing on the new eight-lane, 400-meter track
encircling Top Taggart Field.
HOCKEY TEAM BEATS U of M
The Ferris men's ice hockey team claimed an impressive 4-0 home victory
over defending NCAA-I National Champion, the University of Michigan, in
mid-January before a sellout crowd. The season saw the Bulldogs in sole
possession of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's top position through
Nov. 21.
FSU's 9-3-2 start this campaign was its best since moving to NCAA Division
I and joining the CCHA in 1979-80. Other noteworthy accomplishments include
sophomore goaltender Vince Owen being named the CCHA's Defensive Player-of-the-Week
(POW) twice and U.S. College Hockey Online's National POW. |
