Coming Home to FSU

The October festivities have been a Ferris tradition since 1926, when a group of World War I veterans came up with the idea of hosting an alumni reunion a Homecoming to gather together with their former Gamma Phi Sigma fraternity brothers. In the 70- plus years since then, Homecoming has continued as an annual event on the FSU campus, but traditions within the tradition have changed according to the fancies of each generation. Some practices have just changed form. Others have passed into history.

Like the snake dance. Beginning in the early '40s, a ritual of the Friday night Homecoming kickoff included a very long line of students snaking through the campus. By 1958, the dance extended through town.
