Only 20 non-tour professional golfers qualified to play in the 2008 PGA Championship, which was held last August at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township – and Ferris State University alumni accounted for two of those coveted slots.
Scott Hebert (B’92, pictured) and Alan Morin (B’92) vied for one of golf’s four major championships thanks to their performance at the PGA Professional National Championship at River Pointe Golf Club in Albany, Ga., last June.
Placing an exclamation point on his qualifying for one of the tour’s big four events, Hebert, head golf professional at Grand Traverse Resort & Spa, won the PNC, a tournament that gives club professionals and teachers a shot at appearing in the PGA Championship.
Hebert, a six-time Michigan Open champion, birdied five of the first seven holes on the back nine to finish with a 4-under-par 68, a total tournament score of 12-under-par 276 and a one-stroke win. The victory garnered him a $75,000 payday and entry into six additional PGA Tour events over a 12-month period.
Morin, assistant golf professional at The Falls C.C. in Lake Worth, Fla., joined Hebert at Oakland Hills by virtue of his tie for 15th place with a total score of two-under-par 286. Also last year, Morin made the cut at the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic.
Hebert’s appearance at the ’08 PGA Championship was his second consecutive time contesting that event, while Morin has played in three previous PGA Championships and two U.S. Opens.
Both men hold degrees in Professional Golf Management.
Kunitz Suits up With Penguins

After nearly three full seasons with the Anaheim Ducks, left-winger Chris Kunitz (B’03) has been traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins, who are both looking for a playoff spot and building for the future.
“We identified Chris as being near top of our list in terms of the type of player we wanted,” Penguins Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero said. “I think Kunitz is going to jump right in and be a top-six guy for us.”
Kunitz was a member of Anaheim’s Stanley Cup championship in 2007, playing on a line with All-Star Ryan Getzlaf and Chris Perry. He visited the Ferris campus with the Cup in tow after that championship season.
“I’m going to try to jump in and do whatever I can to help the team win,” said Kunitz. “Pittsburgh plays with a little more speed up the ice. It’s a more give-and-go and skating offensive style. I’ll adapt as quickly as I can.”
The Regina, Saskatchewan native has three years remaining on his NHL contract.
The Yawn as Art

Take 42 bantam chicks (36 White Silkies, five White Crested Black Polish and one Rhode Island Red), put them in a “Dr. Seussian” landscape of live Scottish moss and egg-shaped model buildings, add a “Mozart Effect” soundtrack and what do you get? Fuzzy Warm Sleepy Dorm, a DVD designed to help small children relax and get to sleep.
The brainchild of writer/producer/director/editor Jean Ashton (EHS’80), Fuzzy Warm Sleepy Dorm is not only family friendly (as recognized by the Dove Foundation), it’s also animal friendly. Ashton worked closely with the Escondido Humane Society to help create and maintain an animal-safe environment that extended beyond the set to a post-production adoption event dubbed, “The Crazy Chick Takeout.”
The DVD also has a “Wake Up” track and a mini-documentary on the making of the film. More information is available at www.sleepydorm.us.
