What's in a Backpack?
Book straps, book bags and backpacks have long been a staple of college students' lives. But how have the things those bags hold changed over the years?
Pharmacy and Honors Program student Kim Seaman let us take a look inside her backpack to see what students circa 2006 carry with them. Some things never change (wood-fiber paper was invented in China, 105 A.D.), while newer technologies are bound to go the way of the slide rule.
Here's what we found, with a little background information.

      (Rollover items for information)

What's in a Backpack? Student ID. IBM invents USB drive, 1998. First public call made on a portable cellular phone, April 3, 1973. (First consumer cell phone, the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X, weighed two pounds and sold for $3,995 in 1984.) Sony introduces 3 -inch floppy disk, 1981. (“I know they’re becoming obsolete,” Seaman said.) Patent for pencil with attached eraser issued to Hyman Lipman, 1858 – later invalidated for being a combination of existing inventions without a new use. CPS remote (Classroom Performance System) for interactive wireless classroom response introduced by eInstruction, 2000. Course pack for Physics 211. (Xerox introduces its first photocopier, the Model A, in 1949 and the first automatic, plain paper copier in 1959.) Felt tip pen introduced, 1960. (The highlighter follows in the 1970s.) Change purse. Laszlo Biro invents ballpoint pen, 1938. First Wrigley chewing gum sold 1891. (Eclipse brand introduced, 1999.) Spiral notebook first marketed, 1924.
Missing in action: Books.
("I ordered my Management 302 textbook online, but it's not in yet," explained Seaman. Johannes Gutenberg invents moveable-type printing press, 1436; Jeff Bezos founds Amazon.com, 1995.)
