Kenai Police Department
Officer John Watson
On Christmas evening, Dec.
25, 2003, John Watson (AS’81), the longest-serving police
officer in Kenai, Alaska, died in the line of duty. The 18-year
veteran of the force was 19 months away from retirement.
Some 2,000 people attended a memorial
service for Watson at Kenai Central High School. “The outpouring
of support our family received from the people in Kenai was overwhelming,”
said Watson’s sister, Mary Wilkinson (AH’83), who
attended the ceremony with her mother Sally, and brothers Al and
Tom (EHS’80).
“While John was at Ferris, Mary
and I were also there, so we were able to enjoy the experiences
at Ferris as a family,” said
Tom Watson.
Among those attending was Alaska’s
Lt. Governor Loren Leman, who read a letter to Watson’s
family from Gov. Frank Murkowski.
Chuck Kopp, chief of police for the KPD,
eulogized Watson.
“In a day and age when courage to
do what is right, duty to country, honor and self sacrifice are
often mocked, we are in need of men like John Watson who serve
as point-men to model the way for our young people. I look at
John’s life, and I say –
This is what a man looks like
This is what a man does
This is how a man serves his country, community and family
Not selfishly, but sacrificially.”
Watson was the first Kenai
Police Department officer to fall in the line of duty.
