Ed
Philion, a Bulldog defensive lineman from 1990-93, recorded five
tackles and one sack for the Montreal Alouettes during their 25-16
win over the Edmonton Eskimos in the Canadian Football League
title game. The victory secured the Grey Cup, the equivalent of
the Vince Lombardi Superbowl trophy, for the Alouettes.
The game
was played on Nov. 24 in the Eskimos’ Commonwealth Stadium
in front of 62,531 fans. The score stood at 18-10 late in the
fourth quarter when the Eskimos scored on a 17-yard touchdown
pass. After a failed two-point conversion, an on-side kick by
the Eskimos resulted in a 47-yard scoring return for the Alouettes.
The point-after completed the game’s scoring.
Philion,
who played in the NFL for Buffalo and Jacksonville, is reported
to be one of the CFL’s most hard-nosed players. The championship
season, Montreal’s first since 1977, was the 6-3, 285-pound
Philion’s sixth with the Alouettes.
