From
the Alumni Director

This
past year, Ferris has benefited from an incredible outpouring
of support from you. Alumni efforts helped:
- students
financially, with fee waiver recommendations and scholarships
-
our academics, enhancing students’ classroom learning by
sharing your expertise through campus speaker programs
-
student/alumni career success, by providing internship and career
opportunities
-
the entire University community through your participation in
alumni organizations such as the Torchbearer Society, Honors Alumni,
Ford Alumni and Pharmacy Alumni; and by your presence at homecoming,
golf outings and pre-game receptions
Thank
you!
2003
offers fresh opportunities for you to become active in your Alumni
Association. Join the excitement and tradition by going online
or calling us today.
It’s time again to chronicle my visits with
alumni working in unique and interesting careers. “Off The
Porch 5,” involved visiting alumni Brian Zylstra (E’00)
and Jeff Bogardus (E’96) of DuHadway, Kendall and Associates,
a fast-growing security company in Grand Rapids, Mich. Why? For
starters, “Since 9-11,” said Zylstra, “the market
demand for professional security services, detection canines and
hi-tech surveillance systems has dramatically expanded.”
As I traveled around West Michigan with Zylstra, DK’s
technology director, the variety of clientele was remarkable.
From banks to schools, gas stations to retail stores and storage
facilities, DK’s staff and systems were in place to ensure
safety and efficiency.
According to Bogardus, DK’s uniformed security
director, “Our proximity to Ferris is an important asset
for us as we grow. The real-world education that students in the
criminal justice program and related studies receive make them
excellent candidates for part-time work, internships and, as alumni,
full-time employees.”
Recently DK’s co-founder and chairman, Robert
DuHadway, Senior VP/COO Jerry Vanderveen and Zylstra consulted
with Ferris State Criminal Justice faculty and administration
regarding the feasibility of planning a new “Security Management”
track within the CJ program.
I extend my sincere thanks to everyone at DK for the
opportunity to join their team for a day, and for the continued
support they extend to Ferris State.
Finally, on behalf of the Alumni Association and alumni
everywhere, I would like to thank President William A. Sederburg
for the energy and vision he has instilled in our alma mater over
the past nine years. His presidency will be celebrated in Ferris
history as a time of momentous change, growth and development
that led the University into its second century of higher education
and service to the people of Michigan and beyond.
Have a safe and fun spring and summer and congratulations
to all of our soon-to-be alumni crossing the stage this May!
Sincerely,

Jeremy
J. Mishler, E'96
