Be Your Own Boss,
Says Patrick Gilligan


Patrick Gilligan (HSM’84) has published Patrick Gilligan Says Be Your Own Boss!, available from 1st Books Library (www.1stbooks.com).
In the book, Gilligan tackles many of the issues associated with starting a business, including public relations, marketing and the tax benefits of being an entrepreneur. Patrick Gilligan Says and its author have been featured in the Oakland Press, Macomb Daily, Detroit Free Press and others, as well as on such radio stations as Detroit’s WWJ.
Gilligan, a television and radio personality as well as successful entrepreneur, was profiled in the Spring, 1999 edition of Crimson & Gold.

The 1950s
Glen E. Lipka (P’50), Montague, Mich., owner of Lipka’s Drug Store, recently received the 2000 Muskegon County Senior Citizen Award for his commitment to job, family and community.
Richard Moblo (P’52), Grand Rapids, Mich., and his son Christopher (P’80) work for Walgreens. Richard’s son Andrew (B’85) owns Moby’s Dive Shop and daughter-in-law Jean (Dame) (E’86) is an at-home mom.

The 1960s
Donn Larson (E’60), Mesa, Ariz., has retired after 40 years of teaching and was awarded “Faculty Emeritus” by the Maricopa County Community College District-Phoenix.
John Gilbert (P’61), Ann Arbor, Mich., retired as administrator of St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.
Richard Bugajski (B’62), Bloomington, Ill., retired after 40 years as advertising director for State Farm Insurance. He also served on the Alumni Association Board for 25 years.
Charles W. Duddles (B’62), La Mesa, Calif., retired from Jack in the Box Inc.
as executive vice president and chief
financial officer.
Robert A. Fudge (T’66), South Padre Island, Texas, has joined Fleis & VandenBrink Engineering, Inc.
Augie Hartung (T’67), Redlands, Calif., has joined California State University, San Bernadino, as associate director of Facilities.

The 1970s

Milwaukee Area Technical College Taps Alumnus as President

Last summer, Ferris State alumnus Darnell E. Cole (B’73) was named president of Milwaukee Area Technical College, the largest technical college in the Midwest.
Formerly vice president of Indiana’s Ivy Tech System and chancellor of its Northwest Region, Cole’s work earned him Indiana’s most prestigious honor, the Sagamore of the Wabash award. “Dr. Cole has distinguished himself by his humanity, loyalty, friendship, wisdom and inspiration in leadership,” said Frank O’Bannon, governor of Indiana.
Cole’s career in higher education began with an associate’s degree at Ferris State. “I know how proud my family was when I received that degree,” Cole said. “I look forward to extending that same opportunity to thousands of other people in the Milwaukee area.”
Cole also earned a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Ferris State. He went on to earn a master’s from Central Michigan University and a doctorate from Michigan State University.

James E. Garrett (B’70), Canadian Lakes, Mich., married Clarissa Kaiser, FSU International Student advisor. He is the sales and service manager at Huntington Bank, Rockford office.
Kay L. Bowen (B’73), Barryton, Mich., is now human resources manager at Tubelite, Inc. in Reed City.
Sen. Philip E. Hoffman (E’74), Horton, Mich., was honored by the Great Sauk Trail Council of the Boy Scouts of America as Jackson County Distinguished Citizen of the Year.
Joe Stapel (E’74), Muskegon, Mich., was named campus safety director at Baker College, Muskegon.
Patti Hartman (AH’75), San Diego, Calif., has passed the Hemapheresis Practioner Exam given by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, American Assn. of Blood Banks and American Society for Apheresis, and was recently promoted to assistant manager of Automated Collections for the San Diego Blood Bank.
Faith D. (Mitchell) Coda (B’76), Oviedo, Fla., recently became a first-time grandmother to Tiffany Dianne Coda.
David Zeile (P’76), Merrillville, Ind., married Carol Struble of Alma, Mich.
Tom Rundquist (AS’65) was selected as one of the 2000 Outstanding Artists and Designers of the 20th Century by the International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, England. His art also was recently highlighted at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Art in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The 1980s
Norm Heyboer (E’80), Fort Myers, Fla., has been named head basketball coach at Estero High School in Estero, Fla.
Liz Lake (AH’80), Portage, Mich., recently joined the staff at the Denture Care Clinic in Kalamazoo as lab tech in the denture practice of Dr. Auville Krausa.
Cynthia Tichelaar Osga (B’80), Charlotte, Mich., a Certified Government Financial Manager, has been awarded the Regional Vice President Platinum Level Award from the Association of Government Accountants and has been appointed to its National Executive Committee.
Ken Przeslica (A’80), Phoenix, Ariz.,
was promoted to manager of Aircraft Acquisition and Returns for America
West Airlines.
Mark Sommer (T’80), Walker, Mich., was with the U.S. Postal Service for 15 years and is now lead mechanic.
Don Davis, Jr. (T&AS’81), Anchorage, Alaska, is chair of the Department of Geomatics, School of Engineering, at the University of Alaska Anchorage.
David G. Durkee (O’81), Lowell, Mich., has been elected president-elect of the Michigan Optometric Association.
Patricia Ann Ciulis Irwin (AH’81), Muskegon, Mich., married Timothy J. Knapp, of Ravenna.
Bob Alger (T’82), Shepherd, Mich., was named superintendent of Shepherd
Public Schools.
Jane Fabiano-Turner (B’82), Rockford, Mich., recently started a Web development company, www.jftwd.com.
Darra S. Whaling-Johnson (AH’83), Lakeview, Mich., received the Employee Achieving Recognized Notability award from the Mid-Michigan District Health Department. She is a dental hygienist at the Stanton Dental Care Center.
Daniel Dellar (E’84), Farmington, Mich., has become director of the criminal justice program at West Shore Community College near Ludington.
Darryl T. Johnson (B’84), Suttons Bay, Mich., was elected president of the Rotary Club of Suttons Bay. He is self-employed as an attorney in private practice in Suttons Bay.
Carol (Roszman) Morlan (B’84), Rochester Hills, Mich., was elected first vice-chair for the Michigan Republican State Party.
Duane Shore (T’84), Williamston, Mich., received a Michigan Architectural Registration/License and is currently employed at Fanning/Howey Associates, Inc. in Williamston.
Steven G. Garant (O’85), Alpena, Mich., opened Thunder Bay Eye Care in Alpena.
Blair DuVall (E’86), Frankfort, Mich., has accepted a transfer with the Michigan State Police to the Honor detachment office. JoAnn (Herst) DuVall (AH’87, E’89) has accepted a position with Franke Family Dentistry.
Kevin M. McCarthy (B’86), Kentwood, Mich., was promoted to a director position at Plante & Moran, LLP.
Bridget Fitzpatrick (B’87), White Lake, Mich., married Jay Sawmiller and is currently national account manager for Danaher Industrial, Controls Division.
Charles Gleeson II (T’87), Detroit, Mich., was recognized for his achievements in the construction industry in Crain’s Detroit Business “Forty Under Forty” section.
Daniel Gorman (T’87), Ada, Mich., was promoted to the position of Eastern Region manager of the Rycoline Company.
Bob Kocembo (O’87), Belleville, Mich., recently received a Michigan DNR Master Angler award.
Jerlyn S. (Ramey) Rickwalt (B’87), Hillsdale, Mich., and her husband Alan K. Rickwalt (T’86), announce the birth of their first child, Cole Alan. Jerlyn is an administrative assistant for the accounting firm of Osbourne, March, Condon & Co., P.C., and Alan is manager for AutoZone.
Phillip Benson (B’88), Augusta, N.J., has joined Ziment, a strategic market research consulting company.
David Lawrence (T’88), Rockford, Mich., his wife Kathleen (Walsh) Lawrence (B’89) and their daughter Kelsey welcome Keegan Thomas to their family.
Laura (Renbisz) Cattermole (B’89), Farmington, Mich., is president-elect of the National Association of Women Business Owners, Detroit, and was appointed by the governor to the Michigan Technical Excellence Committee.
David DeSalvo (B’89), Swampscott, Mass., and wife Sandra are new parents
of twin boys, Justin and Michael.
Wendy Humphrey (B’89), Alma, Mich., is an accountant for a church in Alma and has had her fourth child.
Darlene Pulte (AS’89), Saint Clair, Mich., is a social services specialist at Children’s Protective Services in Macomb County and has a daughter, Tyler Doraye Ann.
Robert Walser (T’89), Hanover Park,
Ill., began a new job at Hoffman Estates High School in Illinois teaching auto-
motive technology.

David Cox (E’90), Big Rapids, Mich., has a new baby, Ryan David, and a new job as principal at Mecosta Osceola Career Center.
Myles Embrey (T’90), Locust Grove, Va., was promoted to assistant professor of Automotive Technology at Northern Virginia Community College and program head of the Automotive Dept.
Richard Lauer (B’90), Pearland, Texas, and his wife Tiffany are the proud parents of a baby boy, Wesley Michael.
Susan B. Rickwalt (B’90), Caro, Mich., was promoted to director of Marketing and Training Services for Tuscola Behavioral Health Systems.
Elizabeth M. Becker (O’91), Rochester, Mich., has received a Keyperson Award of the Michigan Optometric Association.
Jill McDonnell (E’91), Macomb, Mich., was promoted to the rank of sergeant with the Auburn Hills Police Department.
Kellie (Boyd) Moore (E’92), Morley, Mich., and her husband John have a new baby girl, Mikayla Faith.
Travis Blythe (E’93), Arlington, Texas, a private investigator for Verasity Research Co., was promoted to Southwest Texas district manager.
Aaron Ells (AH’93), Lansing, Mich., and wife Sarah (Buehler) Ells (AH’92) had their first baby, Jackson Wyatt.

James P. Chenier (T’94), Plymouth, Mich., was promoted to Regional Sales and Operations manager—Central Region at Detroit Diesel Corporation. He is currently a graduate student at Northwest University.
Wendy (Locklear) Lamont (B’94), Clinton Twp., Mich., recently earned an M.S. in Information Technology Management from Central Michigan University and is employed at Daimler Chrysler.
Craig R. Stapley (T’94), Irons, Mich., was named survey manager of Abonmarche Consultants, Inc., Manistee office.

David Lee Nelson (E’95), N. Muskegon, Mich., is a police officer with the City of North Muskegon. He and his wife Tammy have two daughters.
Lori Spires-Brogna (AH’95), Roy, Utah, has been installed as president of the Utah Dental Hygienists’ Association.

Mich., was promoted to vice president of marketing, sales and engineering of Grand Haven Plastics, Inc.
Raidah Subeh (P’96), Sacramento, Calif., and his wife Bashar Elkhatib (B’95) have a new baby girl, Hiba.
Brook Ward (AH’96), Comstock Park, Mich., was named director of diagnostics at Bronson Methodist Hospital.
Wendy Rouech (E’97), Bristol, Conn., now works as a master control operator in Technical Operations at ESPN.

Cory Anderson (B’98), Farmington Hills, Mich., has joined Applied Science & Technology, Inc., as marketing assistant.

Barbara Gielincki (AH’98), Roscommon, Mich., is a family nurse practitioner and has joined Mercy Family Care of Prudenville.
Jeffrey D. Shankland (T’98), Saline, Mich., wed Karla Weidmayer of Ann Arbor.
Trisha G. Townsend (P’98), Muskegon, Mich., married Eric J. Allen of Twin Lake.

Kenzie Homer (B’99), Wyoming, Mich., and wife Kathy (Mull) Homer (E’98), had a baby girl, Riley Dallas. Kenzie played Bulldog hockey and Kathy, volleyball.

Lee J. Ott (T’99), Byron Center, Mich., has accepted a position with Independent Bank Corporation as facility project manager.
Nicole E. Warford (AH’99), Croswell, Mich., married Scott E. Van Ingen (T’98), of Zeeland. Nicole is employed by West Michigan Clinical Lab, and Scott is with Louis Padnos, Inc.

The 2000s
Tiffany Lueken (O’00), Morgan, Minn., joined Eaton Rapids Optometry owned
by Dr. Dan Wrubel (O’80), who has led optometric teams to the West Indies island of Dominica for eight years. Lueken has accompanied Wrubel to Dominica for the past three years.
Nicole (Noel) Meier (AH’00), Suwanee, Ga., was recently married.
Fred Minnich (E’00), Ishpeming, Mich., has received a certificate of appreciation from the Michigan Water Environment Association for his exceptional contributions to the organization.
Mark Caza (E’01), Marysville, Mich., has accepted a teaching position in math and computer science at his former high school, Marysville High School.
Phil Dombrowski (E’01), St. Helen, Mich., has joined the Gerrish Township Police force.
