Pasquale Di Raddo
Who:
Chemistry professor Pasquale Di Raddo,
2006 Distinguished Teacher of the Year

Recent publications:
Chemistry-related poetry appearing in the Journal of Chemical Education, Chemical Heritage and other journals, and an article on his use of comic-strip images for teaching lab safety. “I have written limericks, free-verse and haiku for use as teaching tools and to keep things light in the classroom.
“With the permission of publishers, I use comic strips where some character Bruce Wayne (aka Batman), for instance is in a laboratory setting without safety glasses or wearing inappropriate clothing. It’s been an excellent tool for introducing principles of laboratory safety.”

Extracurricular service:
Faculty advisor to Ferris’ pre-Optometry Club, Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical fraternity, pre-Med Club and American Chemical Society (ACS) Student Affiliate Chapter.
“The last couple of years I’ve attended ACS meetings in San Diego, Atlanta and Frankenmuth with club members. It’s an exhilarating and unique experience for our students to be with their peers from universities throughout the country.
“In addition to obtaining an outstanding affiliate chapter award, our ACS club has received a “green” chemistry award for three years now. Being green includes improving awareness of the environmental dangers of chemicals and the possibilities of using non-toxic, or reduced-toxic chemicals. These awards are a credit to our students’ talent, drive and ambition.”

On teaching at Ferris:
“Providing a superior level of instruction that prepares students for professional and graduate schools or the workforce is of paramount importance. Since we don’t have laboratory assistants, our science students come into greater direct contact with their professors. Those students who come here from larger schools tell us of their experiences in huge auditoriums and about hardly ever interacting with their professors one-on-one, and certainly not in the laboratory. After being at two schools prior to coming here, this is by far my best experience. I’m grateful.”
