It’s a regular occurrence for me to encourage others to “Share Bulldog Pride,” particularly as we head into the fall with the start of classes, Homecoming and a new season of athletics. However, Chris Kunitz (B’03) took sharing his Ferris pride to a whole new level this past July.
Many of you may know that Chris, a former Bulldog hockey standout, is now a first-line left winger for the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League. And while some of us in Michigan were perhaps pulling for the Red Wings in last spring’s playoffs, seeing Chris play an integral part in the Ducks winning the Stanley Cup was more than just a consolation prize. And then the magic happened.
Chris contacted hockey coach Bob Daniels and FSU Blueline Club leader Bob Boyce to let us know that as part of his day with Lord Stanley’s Cup, he wanted to share his achievement with Ferris and the Big Rapids community before continuing on to his hometown of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. It was an amazing day for our students, faculty, staff, the Big Rapids community and hockey fans from far beyond! (See the story on page 17). Thank you, Chris, and the many staff and volunteers who helped Chris make the most of his time with one of sports most coveted trophies.
There were other wonderful moments in places both near and far where alumni gathered to share Bulldog pride this past year: Sarasota, Orlando, Phoenix, Tucson, Chicago, Detroit, Traverse City, Grand Blanc and Grand Rapids. We were also very proud to award our Legacy Scholarships to 20 Ferris students continuing our tradition of helping the next generation of Bulldogs work toward their goals.
There are numerous opportunities for you to join with fellow alumni this fall, by coming up for Homecoming and with several other planned activities (see schedule on page 39). And don’t forget there are also many concerts, lectures, plays, art openings and athletic contests all year long. Check out the calendar on the Ferris home page to see what events you can take in on your own when you’re in town.
The Ferris Alumni Association and Alumni Relations staff are committed to helping you stay engaged and involved with your alma mater. We hope to hear from you soon or better yet, see you in person.
Best wishes for a safe and fun fall season, and Go Dawgs!
Sincerely,
Jeremy Mishler, E '96
