George Alex Rapanos, the son of Greek immigrants, was born in Chicago in 1933.
Rapanos married Suanne Henry in 1962. The couple lived in Midland, Mich., where Rapanos was a land developer and businessman. He built homes, owned the Executive House, Pickle Barrel Restaurant, Cabaret Lounge and Camelot Dinner Theatre. He was instrumental in developing the Arnold Center, a non-profit community rehabilitation organization, and served as board president.
One of Rapanos’ gifts to the Ferris State University was the Circle of Inspiration, which features Pharaoh’s Obelisk, a 36-foot-tall granite monument, and some of Rapanos’ own poetry.
Rapanos passed away in Naples, Fla., March 18, 2007. He is survived by his wife, Suanne, five children, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Beyond the Horizon
The mind is forever yearning,
In this world of turmoil and strife.
Those who see beyond the horizon,
Are aware of eternal life.
- George Rapanos
