Bulldog Bites

Bacon Named National Rookie of the Year
Brenton Bacon
Brenton Bacon

Freshman Brenton Bacon of the men’s tennis team was honored as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s National Rookie Player of the Year. The ITA made the announcement in conjunction with the NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships last May in Kansas City.
The 2006 GLIAC Freshman of the Year and First Team honoree also received the ITA’s 2006 Great Lakes Region Rookie Player of the Year award.
Bacon posted a team-best 18-5 overall singles record during 2005-06, including a 9-4 mark at the number one flight in dual match competition while also tallying a 30-3 overall doubles record. He reached the singles quarterfinal round and advanced to the doubles semifinals at the ITA Great Lakes Region Championships held last fall in Midland. He claimed top individual flight championships in both the Bulldog Team Invitational and the Chicago State “Windy City” Fall Invitational.
The Bulldog men’s tennis team advanced to the NCAA-II Tournament for the ninth-straight year and 12th time in school history during the 2005-06 campaign. Ferris placed second overall at the GLIAC Tournament last season. The Bulldogs recorded a 16-8 overall record, including a second-place 6-1 mark in league action.
As the governing body of collegiate tennis, the ITA promotes both the athletic and academic achievements of the collegiate tennis community.

Gaylor Signs With Lightning

Jen Gaylor
Jen Gaylor

Senior midfielder Jen Gaylor of the 2005 Ferris State University women’s soccer team has signed to play with the Minnesota Lightning of the United Soccer Leagues’ W-League.
This past year, Gaylor was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Great Lakes Region Second Team for her play with the Bulldogs, becoming the first player in the seven-year history of the women’s soccer program to attain all-region recognition.
Gaylor compiled a team-leading 10 goals this season. Her 20 total points included three game-winning markers. The Roscommon native concluded her career listed fourth among the program’s all-time scoring leaders with 47 career points on 20 goals and seven assists.
Ferris, which won 10 of its final 14 outings this campaign, wrapped up its 2005 slate with an 11-7 overall record and a fourth place 5-3 GLIAC finish. The Bulldogs’ 11 victories this season tied for the program’s most wins in school history.
The W-League, widely recognized as North America’s best women’s developmental organization, is also an open league, giving college players the chance to play alongside established international players while maintaining collegiate eligibility. Gaylor has also played for the Detroit Jaguars W-league franchise and the Cincinnati Ladyhawks.

Bulldog Golfers Finish Second in National Tourney

The Ferris women’s golf team came within strokes of taking the national title.
The Ferris women’s golf team came within strokes of taking the national title.

During four rainy days last May, the women’s golf team came within about a stroke per team member of unseating one of the most dominant teams in college sports.
The Bulldogs finished second to four-time reigning champion Rollins College, May 10-13 at The Meadows Golf Club in Allendale. Rain shortened what was scheduled to be a 72-hole event. After the 54th and final hole, Ferris finished just six strokes behind Rollins 925 to 919. In 2004 when the Bulldogs finished second to the Tars, the margin of victory was 68 strokes, and Rollins’ average margin of victory in the previous three championships was 47 strokes.
In the closing holes Ferris pulled within three strokes of Rollins, before the Tars’ Mariana De Biase finished with two birdies to outpace the Bulldogs. De Biase also captured the individual title with a 220 total. Ferris junior Casey McKinnon, who shot 77 in the final round, and senior Elena Robles, who shot a final day 74, tied for third individually.
Freshman Meghan Hunter finished in 13th place with a score of 237. Sophomore Becky Hoffman tied for 19th-place at 239 score, and sophomore Missy Ward shot a three-round 248 en route to tying for 35th place.
It was only the Bulldogs who mounted a serious challenge to the Tars, who played under much cooler conditions than the Florida-based team normally enjoy. Third-place Lynn University finished 32 strokes behind Rollins, and host Grand Valley finished 44 strokes back.
“I can’t believe we gave mighty Rollins College a run for their money,” said coach Brad Bedortha. “I knew we had the capability, but I didn’t think it would get us that close. I’m so proud.”
In addition to being NCAA-II runners-up, Robles was selected the 2005-06 GLIAC Women’s Golf Athlete of the Year. Hoffman, McKinnon and Ward joined Robles in receiving GLIAC first-team honors.
The Bulldogs’ effort matched the team’s previous best-ever national finish for a Ferris athletic team.

Browns Sign Brewster
Former Bulldog flanker Carlton Brewster has inked a free agent contract with the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League. Brewster reported to the team’s rookie mini-camp and opening workouts last May.
Brewster concluded his collegiate career in 2005 by garnering three different national honors, including the American Football Coaches Association All-America Team. He ranks second among Ferris’ all-time receiving leaders with 3,184 career receiving yards and 25 TD’s on 234 receptions.
Brewster is the seventh Ferris State player to ever sign a NFL contract. The select group consists of running back Dave Gagnon, outside linebacker Monty Brown, defensive tackle Ed Philion, defensive end Dave Zuiderveen, flanker Clarence Coleman and tackle Matt McCoy.
