Dear Fellow Alumni,
I don't often have occasion to submit a class note to Crimson & Gold, but here goes:
On Tuesday, April 12, at 1:21 p.m., my wife, Angie, delivered our first child: Harrison Alexander Mishler, who arrived a lean
7 lbs, 12 oz, and 21.5 inches long. The Ferris Athletics department should consider this an official letter of intent that
Harrison will play football, basketball or maybe golf for the Bulldogs starting in 2022.
When friends and family ask about our experience, Angie and I use certain words with exhaustive frequency: Joy, elation,
jubilance, amusement, merriment, cheer, delight, pride, hilarity, gladness, gratification, humor, satisfaction, solace,
treasure, comfort and wonder.
The days of fathers removed from the birthing process nervously pacing the waiting room, cigarette in mouth, may be over
but the worry part is not. Stressed out from events and lack of sleep, I pleaded with doctors, nurses, even the janitorial
staff, to convince Harrison to nurse. After several hours without nourishment, I was sure he was going to starve.
Fortunately, Harrison soon figured out the whole nursing bit and was fine, as I was repeatedly assured by the doctors,
nurses and janitors.
We want to share with everyone our thanks for the arrival of a healthy son to our home. Thanks to our family and friends
for the warm, generous and gracious ways they welcomed Harrison into our world. And yes, thanks to my other family, my fellow
alumni, colleagues and friends of Ferris State University. Because I receive your notes updating us on successes, new unions,
family additions, and even sometimes losses, I know that Ferris is a part of your family, too.
Fall is the perfect time to reunite with your alma mater. Don't resist the temptation to visit Big Rapids for a football game,
catch up with the latest news from old friends and roommates, and generally enjoy the traditions of homecoming (see schedule of events, pp. 35).
As far as the Ferris family goes, you should know that this fall your Alumni Association is celebrating the success of 17 students
whose parents, grandparents or siblings are proud alumni, by presenting to each of them a $1,000 Alumni Legacy Scholarship, so
they can continue working toward their educational goals at Ferris.
I look forward to hearing from you soon so that we can continue to strengthen and celebrate the vitality and legacy that is
Ferris State University. But now I have to gird myself for one of the great challenges of fatherhood the deciphering of assembly
instructions for yet another educational toy.
Sincerely,

Jeremy Mishler, E ‘96
