Shirley Marie Young
Big Rapids, Mich., 7/2/05
Because teachers make a difference in lives one classroom or one student at a time, we don't always stop to think how many students a
single teacher reaches in a lifetime.
For Shirley Marie Young, that figure is around 20,000.
The former Chemistry and Math professor joined Ferris in 1948 and retired in 1985.
Young's reputation was such that students competed with each other for coveted slots her classes. She received recognition as
teacher of the year several times as selected by student groups.
Young's peers recognized her dedication by naming her Distinguished Teacher of the Year and Woman of the Year during her long career.
