Ferris Honors Those Called to Military Service
Last spring, students, faculty and staff gathered
in front of the Ferris Library for Information, Technology and Education
to pay tribute to those members of the University who were called
upon to serve in the military.
Speakers at the event included Office of Minority
Student Affairs Head Raymond Gant, Vice President for Student Affairs
Dan Burcham, Army Reserves Lt. Col. Karl Shangraw and Recreation
Management grad Cinnamon Dockham.
Gant read a statement by U.S. Congressman Dave
Camp in which he said, “I would like to commend the sacrifice
these citizens and soldiers make to keep America strong and free,
as well as the sacrifices made by their families and communities
during their absence.”
Shangraw addressed directly those members of the
Ferris community in active duty. “We recognize today you men
and women of the Ferris State University community, as well as all
members of our military,” he said. “When our country
called, you answered.”
After Dockham recounted the history and symbolism
of yellow flags or ribbons to those away from home in military service,
an ROTC color guard raised a special flag in honor of those called
away from the Ferris community.
The proceedings concluded with Gant noting the
support from members of the entire University. “It’s
not about whether you support the war or oppose the war,”
Gant said. “It’s about the soldiers who have been deployed
from Ferris State—the students, faculty and staff who are
serving us.”
Approximately 30 people from the Ferris community
were called to active duty in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
