The 1960s
Richard Bugajski (B’62), Bloomington, Ill., retired from State Farm after 40 years.

Stuart Sinai (B’63), Troy, Mich., has published his third major article on insider trading in Securities Regulation Law Journal, fall 2002 issue. He is with the law firm Kemp, Klein, Umphrey & Endelman, P.C.

Thomas Rundquist (AS’65), Big Rapids, Mich., recently had one of his art works, “Kundalini,” included in the trade magazine Art Business News. He was selected as one of the 2000 Outstanding Artists of the 20th Century and included in Art Communications International’s juried CD-ROM.

Jon Wise (B’69), Lansing, Mich., has retired as director of Professional Practice for the Michigan office of the Auditor General after 30 years of state service.

The 1970s
Kathleen Natushko (E’71), Madison Heights, Mich., is president of a home-based business, Purebreed Lab Rescue Inc. She is also national coordinator for Labrador Retrievers.

John Stark (AS’71), Houghton Lake, Mich., opened his own art gallery, J. Stark Artwork.

Daniel Theobald (B’72), Simpsonville, S.C., is a Lifetime Member of Strathmore’s Who’s Who, which limits inclusion to individuals who have demonstrated leadership and achievement in their occupation, industry or profession. He is president of Environmental Services, a consulting firm.

Dale Bauer (B’73), Rogers City, Mich.,
is now Huron National Bank’s president and CEO.

Clay Strait (B’73), Saginaw, Mich., joined Saginaw Habitat for Humanity as construction manager.

Nancy Bowman (B’74), Lake City, Mich., was appointed to the Board of Directors of Chemical Financial Corporation.

John Bradac (E’74), Mt. Pleasant, Mich., was appointed to Ferris State’s Foundation Board of Directors.

Al Rosebrook (P’74), Lakeview, Mich., is pharmacy manager of Kelsey Memorial Health Center.

Chad Capanda (B’75), San Juan Capistrano, Calif., is project manager for restaurant construction in Southern California at C.J. Torre Construction Co.

Fr. Ronald Lee Green (E’75), New York, N.Y., was promoted to assistant director of pastoral care at Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center, an 800-bed skilled nursing facility in East Harlem.

Robert Kloc (T’75), Bay City, Mich., has been awarded the Gold Club status for real estate sales, placing him among the top one percent of all real estate agents in the nation.

Dan Smith (E’75), Grand Ledge, Mich., was promoted to Captain, Michigan State Police, Special Operations Division.

Sally Cunningham (B’76), Wexford,
Pa., was appointed Software Engineering Institute counsel. She is also program director for SEI’s Technology Transition Services and has taught courses and held seminars in Copyright Law and Government Contracting.

Richard Hatch (B’76), Comstock Park, Mich., was appointed the new creative director of Francis Marketing in Grand Rapids.

Garth Kriewall (AS’76), Port Huron, Mich., is now grant writer/communications specialist with the St. Clair County Intermediate School District. He and his wife, Diane (Sokol) (AH’81), have two sons.


Jim Webb (B’77) and Theresa (Bugnell) Webb (E’78), Rockford, Mich., are the proprietors of The Bostwick Lake Inn in Rockford. Daughter Kate is now in Ferris’ Honors Program pursuing a Visual Design/Web Media degree. Other family members are Ernie (16) and Tyler (10).


Gregg Baldwin (T’78), Labadie, Mo., has accepted the position of vice president/sales with Gooder-Henrichsen Company, a steel joist and girder manufacturer in Chicago.

Stephen Ehardt (P’78), Lexington, Mich., a member of the Michigan House
of Representatives, received the 2003 American Pharmacy Association Hubert Humphrey Award.

Dave Wertheimer (T’78), Novi, Mich., was elected vice president of MI Judo and is a Detroit section manager for the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.

Douglas Lubahn (E’79), Lapeer, Mich., was named commander of the state police post in Lapeer.

Bonnie Dicks (O’80), Lansing, Mich., married Ken Somes, also of Lansing.

Daniel Slate (B’80), Fremont, Mich., was appointed to the Chemical Bank West, Central Community Bank Board of Directors.

Daniel Wesche (E’81), Big Rapids, Mich., was named magistrate, court administrator and supervisor for the Osceola County 77th District Court.

Brian Barry (AS’82), Moorpark, Calif., was appointed to the Gatorade Job Placement Committee as the Corporate/Industrial representative from the National Athletic Trainers Association. He is National Sales manager for Hely & Weber Orthopedic & Sports Medicine based in Santa Paula.

Kim (Hill) DeGroot (AH’82), Macomb Twp., Mich., and husband, Jim, welcomed their second child, Andrew William, who joins big brother David.

Anthony Houle (B’82), South Lyon, Mich., received for the third year in a row the Golden Sales Award for Top Sales Performance. He is a territory sales manager in the dental industry.

Tamyra Plourd (AS’82), Big Rapids, Mich., wed Gerald Gillis, also of Big Rapids.

Teri Simpson (AH’82), Ludington, Mich., was promoted to director of quality resource management and education at Memorial Medical Center.

Dale Moore (B’83), Capac, Mich., was named Marlette High School principal.

George Nicolas Jr. (O’83), Bellevue, Neb., was promoted to colonel in the U.S. Air Force.

Denise (Grammel) Parker (AH’83), Delton, Mich., recently completed the national qualifying exam and achieved the Certified Coding Specialist credential. She wed Richard L. Parker II in 1996 and welcomed son Kyle Richard in 1998.

Allen Parkes (B’83), Oakland, Ill., has been recognized by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of American as a Certified Golf Course Superintendent and is only the eighth PGA professional to achieve this status, the highest achievement attainable by the GCSAA. He is general manager at Oak Hills Country Club in Palos Heights.

Mike Worden (B’83), Beulah, Mich., was appointed executive vice president of the Honor State Bank.

Kenneth Church (E’84), Springdale, Ark., is a patrol sergeant with the Springdale Police Dept.

Kim Hamilton (AH’84), Vassar, Mich., was elected national president of the American Business Women’s Association.

Daniel Pionk (B’84), Minneapolis, Minn., was named commander of the Navy Cargo Handling Battalion Seven.

Tim Brian (B’85), Interlochen, Mich., was named Michigan Food Processor Association Raw Product Person of the Year.

Gregory Chancey (B’85), Grosse Pointe Park, Mich., is now senior manager, Industry Analysis Group, AutoPacific Inc., Detroit.

Delores Duddles-Berta (E’85), Empire, Mich., joined Leland Public Schools as counselor.

Sue Erlewine (AH’85), Athens, Ohio, was elected to the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses, Education Committee, for a second two-year term. She is a nursing instructor at Hocking College and is pursuing a master’s in Nursing Education.

Stephen Rockman (P’85), Holt, Mich., has joined Clark Hill PLC as an associate. He is a member of the American Society for Pharmacy Law, the Michigan Pharmacists Assn., and the Capital Area Pharmacists Assn., of which he was formerly Chairman, President and Executive Board Member.

Rick Behnke (E’86), Dowagiac, Mich., was appointed Cass County undersheriff.

Jeffrey Cipcic (B’87), Grand Rapids, Mich., co-owns Jeffrey Richard Salon, which was named one of the nation’s fastest-growing salons by Salon Today magazine.

Mike MacKay (T’87), Vassar, Mich., is now president of Vassar Building Center.

Michael McCaw (E’87), Kalamazoo, Mich., was named assistant chief of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.

Richard Simmons (T’87), Scotts, Mich., married Deborah Dufur of Hillsdale.

Andy Askler (P’88) and Kathy (Murphy) Askler (B’87), Battle Creek, Mich., welcomed their second child, McKenzie Grace, who joins her sister, Kaitlyn Rose.

Joe Bippus (E’88), Three Rivers, Mich., is city manager of Three Rivers.

William Butler (B’88), Marysville, Mich., was named a partner in the CPA firm of Cummings, Frohm & Wagley, P.C. in Port Huron.

Lori (Harville) Dettloff (P’88) and Rick Dettloff (P’89), Rockford, Mich., announce the birth of their third child, Mason Richard, who joins sisters Danielle and Marissa. Lori is with St. Mary’s Mercy Medical Center and Rick with Pfizer Pharmaceuticals.

Todd Bernson (P’89), Gladstone, Mich., has joined the Medicine Shoppe in Escanaba as pharmacy manager.

Daniel Ebright (B’89), Dorr, Mich., and his wife, Karen, now have a daughter, Madison.

Scott Jeffries (P’89) and Pamela (Sturm) Jeffries (P’91), Indianapolis, Ind., adopted their second child from Kamensk-Uralsky, Russia, Nikolas Pavel Jeffries. He joins big brother, Alexander.

Rhonda Rupert (B’89), Temperance, Mich., was named senior associate of the engineering firm of Finkbeiner, Pettis & Strout, Inc. in Toledo, Ohio.

Kipp Rustenholtz (AH’89), Kalamazoo, Mich., married Cindy DeHaven, also of Kalamazoo.

Charmaine Smith (E’89), Henderson, Nev., wed Mike Schwanke of Las Vegas.

Ron Smolen (P’89), Whitehall, Mich., received a doctor of pharmacy degree from the University of Washington in Seattle and is a certified disease manager through the National Institute for Standards in Pharmacist Credentialing in asthma, diabetes and hyperlipidemia. He is with Walgreen Drug Co. in Muskegon.

Scott Lewis (B’90), New Era, Mich., was selected as the 2002 Oceana Conservation District’s Conservationist of the Year.

Wil and David McFadden (AS’90), Mt. Clemens, Mich., opened Back N Action Chiropractic Clinic in Clinton Twp.

Brad Pinkerton (B’90), Clermont, Fla., accepted a classified ad sales representative position with Orlando Sentinel Communications.

Tim Platz (T’02) and Deana (Phillips) Platz (O’98), Sand Lake, Mich., announce the birth of their second daughter, Karlie Rae, who was welcomed home by big sister Morgan.

Kendra Schmoekel (AH’02), Whitehall, Mich., wed Jonathan Wright of Muskegon. They live in Kaneohe, Hawaii.

Christopher Zehnder (O’02), Frankenmuth, Mich., joined the staff of Family Eye Care Center.

Sara Johnson (AH’03), Midland, Mich., wed Daniel TerBurgh, also of Midland. They reside in Twentynine Palms, Calif.


Jack Groot

  Jack Groot (B’84) changed his major at Ferris from Data Processing (as it was called then) to Food Service Management. It turned out to be the right move. That one decision led to him owning multiple food service establishments.

   In 1993, Groot and his wife Tracy opened JP’s Coffee & Espresso Bar in Holland, Mich., which has become a mainstay of downtown. In 2000, they opened Rubyjuice Fruit and Smoothies - offering a mix of smoothies, juices, sandwiches, salads and more - next door to JP’s.
   In January, Groot began offering franchise opportunities, anticipating growth of the smoothie industry due to the lack of healthy and low-fat fast food options and the busy lifestyle
of consumers.


Rod Taylor

  In January, Rod Taylor (EHS’91) became the East Coast Hockey League’s all-time leading scorer with an assist while playing for the South Carolina Stingrays against the Greensboro Generals.
  Taylor’s record-setting point was his 686th in 12 seasons in the ECHL. Taylor also holds the ECHL all-time records for regular season games played with 669 and goals with 368.
   The 36-year-old Taylor began his professional career in 1991-92 with the Hampton Roads Admirals scoring 50 points in 40 regular season games. He led the 1992 Riley Cup Playoffs with 16 goals and 26 points while helping the Admirals capture the ECHL Championship.
   The 5-10 and 185-pound Taylor played nine seasons for Hampton Roads from 1991-2000, scoring 64 points in 73 postseason games to help the Admirals capture the Kelly Cup in 1998. He had 25 points in 33 games with the Richmond Renegades in 2001-02 before finishing the season with the Express in Roanoke where he scored 24 points in 21 regular season games and one point in post-season play.
