Coach
Keri Becker Served Country in 2003
Ferris State softball coach Keri Becker missed the
2003 season as a result of being called to active duty in the United
States of America Army Reserves.
Becker reported to Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., for training
in February, then served at the Military Command Center in Doha, Qatar.
“I’m truly honored to go and knew this
might happen when I enlisted 10 years ago,” said Becker, who held
the rank of sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserves at the time of her deployment.
The program’s all-time winningest coach, Becker
has compiled a current 201-125 overall record (.617 winning pct.) in
six seasons at Ferris State. Becker recorded her 200th career coaching
victory at the 2002 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
Softball Tournament in Ashland, Ohio, as the Bulldogs posted a 5-4 triumph
over the Hillsdale Chargers.
Despite serving overseas, Becker was named 2003 GLIAC
Coach of the Year by the other coaches in the league.
“Her being given this award shows that the other
coaches in the league see the same high qualities in her that I see,”
said Athletics Director Tom Kirinovic, who also sees the award as a
tribute to the other GLIAC coaches. “Not many other groups of
coaches would be able to come together to make an award like this one
possible.”
Assistant coaches Lesa Bickley and Chad Haberland
headed the team in Becker’s absence.
