Claims Regional Title, Player of the Year
Ferris State’s men’s tennis team advanced
to the NCAA Division II Championship round for the fourth consecutive
season with a 5-2 win over the Wayne State Warriors in the Great Lakes
Regional title match held last May at the Racquet and Fitness Center
in Big Rapids.
The Bulldogs victory concluded the 2002-03 campaign
for the Warriors, who finished the season with a 26-9 overall record
after falling to Ferris State in the regional final for the second straight
year.
Going into the regional championship the Bulldogs,
who were ranked 26th in the Omni Hotels/Intercollegiate Tennis Association
Division II National poll, posted a 5-0 opening-round win versus Shepherd
(W.Va.) to reach the final under first-year head coach Kevin Brandalik.
The Bulldogs, who clinched their seventh overall berth
in the national finals round, took part in the 16-team single elimination
national championship field, May 8-11 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte
Springs, Fla., where they dropped a 5-1 decision to Drury (Mo.). Ferris
State concluded its season with an 18-8 overall record.
Team captain Jan Talian became the first Ferris State
player in nine years to be named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference Player of the Year. The league’s nine head coaches
participated in the balloting process.
Talian is the eighth Ferris player and first since
Werner Huss in 1994 to claim the league’s highest individual honor.
He was one of four Bulldog players to receive all-conference recognition.
Junior Francisco Valencia and sophomore Martin Hoch joined Talian as
first-team All-GLIAC picks while sophomore Jason Cole garnered second-team
laurels for the second consecutive season.
Talian, a three-time first-team all-conference selection,
claimed the 2002 Omni Hotels/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Great
Lakes Region Singles Championship and finished league regular-season
singles action at 7-0. The two-time ITA Division II Singles and Doubles
All-America performer also teamed with Cole to win the regional doubles
crown.
