Golf Team Goes to Nationals for Second Straight Year
With three of the top four individual finishers, Ferris
State captured first-place honors at the NCAA Division II Great Lakes
Regional, May 5-7 at the Silo Ridge Country Club in Bolivar, Mo.
Heading into the Regional, the Bulldogs had registered
four first-place performances in the 2002-03 season, taking top honors
at the Ferris State Fall Invitational in Big Rapids, the Northwood Invitational
in Saginaw, the Findlay Invitational in Arlington, Ohio, and the Hillsdale
Invitational in Coldwater.
At the regional, Ferris State maintained its hold
on first place throughout the three rounds, finishing with a three-round
total of 895, seven strokes in front of second-place Findlay’s
902 total score on the 6,840-yard par 72 course.
Senior Tyler Averdick led the way with a stroke total
of
219 (71-77-71), which earned him a two-way tie for second place individually.
By claiming the regional crown, the Bulldogs automatically
advanced for the second consecutive season to the NCAA-II National Championships,
May 20-23 at the Sunriver Resort’s Crosswater Golf Club in Sunriver,
Ore., where they finished 15th in the 18-team field.
