Ferris Launches Innovative New MBA Program
Ferris State’s College of Business has long had
a master’s degree program in Information Systems Management
that brought students from around the globe to the Big Rapids campus.
What it hasn’t had is a master’s degree
in Business Administration—until now.
College of Business Dean David Nicol, Professor
Sid Sytsma and Graduate Programs Chair William Boras have developed
a unique MBA program geared toward working adults with no prior
business training and focused on organizational systems and performance
metrics as the keys to business success.
“We’ve developed an MBA program that
sets us apart from other institutions due to its unique focus and
flexible, self-contained nature.” said Nicol.
Prototypical Ferris graduate students are working
adults in their late 20s or early 30s, with several years of work
experience and bachelor’s degrees in non-business fields,
who find themselves in the position of needing to manage resources
due to changes in current employment or the desire for career advancement.
The new program presents a conventional MBA program with a general
management option and a range of specialized techno-MBA concentrations
including e-business, networking, or information security and forensics.
The new MBA program welcomes its first students
this fall and allows the University to move its acclaimed ISM master’s
degree from more of a generalist program to a true information systems/information
technology focus for those persons interested in preparing for a
career in IT or enhancing technical skills. As with the MBA program,
ISM students will be able to enter the program with a bachelor’s
degree from any discipline. Both programs will be offered in compressed
seven-week online formats with enhanced online weekend sessions
to respond to students’ particular needs and responsibilities.
Both the MBA and MS-ISM programs at Ferris have
been developed so that no one course is a prerequisite for another—which
means courses need not be taken in a particular order. Students
can enter at any point and accelerate or slow their progress based
upon their particular situations.
“We’ve developed a truly unique MBA
program and enhanced our ISM offering to a point that our graduate
programs are on the cutting edge,” Boras said.
