Greetings, fellow alumni
I
didn’t have to travel far for this installment of “Off The
Porch,” in which I share professional experiences with some of our
alumni. Instead, I recalled the Field of Dreams adage and thought “If
we build a bigger porch, they will come.” And many of you did.
This
past April, the colleges of Education & Human Services and Allied
Health Sciences held “Alumni Return Day” seminars. The COEHS
program had alumni in the classroom throughout the week of April 9, discussing
trends related to education, criminal justice and child development, culminating
with the Television Production program’s 2nd Annual Video Festival
and a luncheon sponsored by the Alumni Association.
On
Friday, April 26, more than two dozen alumni returned to CAHS to present
on topics including “Transcultural Nursing,” “The Implications
of Bioterrorism in the Insurance Industry” and “The Impact
of the Healthcare Information Portability and Accountability Act.”
The seminar highlight was a keynote presentation by Dr. Donald J. Gordon,
Ph.D., M.D., an expert on bioterrorism, emergency medicine and disaster
management.
On
behalf of both colleges, the University and the Alumni Association, I
extend our deepest appreciation and thanks to all who participated as
guest speakers.
As
for what’s coming up this fall, well… “Come on down!
You’re the next contestant on Homecoming 2002!”
That’s
right, Bulldog alumni—we want you to come back to campus Oct. 10-12
and help us celebrate our longest standing tradition, game-show style.
This
year’s festivities include a bonfire and pep rally, a primetime
comedian at Williams Auditorium, Alumni nine-hole golf scramble, Alumni
welcome tent and tailgater, annual parade through downtown Big Rapids,
Bulldog Football vs. Michigan Tech, all-student,
all-alumni dance reception at the Big Rapids Holiday Inn Hotel & Conference
Center with reunions sponsored by the Gridiron Club, Honors Alumni, Pharmacy
classes of ‘67 and ‘82 and Minority Affairs.

and hotel information, just log on to www.ferrisalumni.org and click on
the Homecoming 2002 banner or call 888-FSU-DOGS (378-3647).
Finally,
the Alumni Association and the Office of Student Leadership and Activities
is working with several of you who were leaders of student organizations
to form a new alumni organization, the Torchbearer Society, with the goal
of supporting student leadership activities on campus. If you would like
to help launch this new organization, please visit our table at the dance
reception at Homecoming 2002 or contact our office at 888-378-3647, or
Student Leadership & Activities at 231-591-2606. Of course, you can
always visit us on the Web at www.ferris.edu/education/alumni.
Best wishes for a great school year!
Sincerely,

Jeremy J. Mishler, E’96
