Distinguished Alumni
As
president of Imperial Headwear Inc. since 1998, John C. Bond
has overseen substantial gains in his Denver-based company’s sales
and market share. In addition to his business successes, Bond finds time
to help raise money for Colorado Special Olympics and Habitat for Humanity.
His involvement in an annual golf tournament has helped raise more than
$1 million for the Special Olympics since 1988. Bond also has been a strong
supporter of the Professional Golf Management Learning Center at Katke
Golf Course. The facility provides training opportunities for students
and serves as a recreational resource for the entire community. During
the past 12 years Bond has returned regularly to share his insights and
experience with PGM students and is highly supportive of both the PGM
and Ferris Alumni Associations.
Joseph
J. Corcoran II has maintained close ties to Ferris State throughout
his career. The vice president of operations for the F. P. Horak Company
in Bay City, Mich., gives several guest lectures each semester, provides
students opportunities to sharpen their interviewing skills and gives
tours to student groups. He also is on the advisory boards of the Printing
and Imaging Technology Management Department and the Technology Transfer
Center. Corcoran is F. P. Horak’s coordinator for United Way of
Bay County. He further combines his business and community interests by
representing his company on the Alliance for Bay County Schools, helping
to develop and administer a high-school job-shadowing program.
Jim
Meyer joined Spartan Stores Inc. in 1973 as director of retail
accounting. In 1989, he became the company’s senior vice president
and chief financial officer. Today, Meyer is Spartan Stores chairman,
president and chief executive officer. He has provided the vision for
Spartan Stores’ re-entry into the retail supermarket business, growing
its retail store base to 102 supermarkets and 25 deep discount combination
food and drug stores with annual sales approaching $4 billion. Meyer also
is deeply involved with his community, serving as board chair for Heart
of West Michigan United Way and Davenport University, and as a member
of the board of Employer’s Coalition for Healing Racism. An ardent
supporter of Ferris, Meyer has also guided Spartan Stores to support the
growing Ferris State University-Grand Rapids campus.
Above and Beyond
Award
Robert
J. Purtee and William M. Wolbrink
received the inaugural Above and Beyond Award. Distinguished
alumnus John and wife Sue Bradac have established this award
to honor soon-to-be alumni who have made significant contributions
to the campus and alumni communities through their service.

Pacesetter Awards
A
few of Mechelle A. Churchfield’s titles include
senior research and development technologist for Dow Chemical Company,
company recruiter for Industrial Chemistry Technology and Plastics Engineering
Technology students and Dow’s representative to the Ferris State
University Industrial Chemistry Technology Program. Churchfield has helped
to secure funds from the Dow Chemical Company Foundation in support of
the ICT program. For the last two years, she has given a presentation
on “Industrial Chemistry Technology—What Is It?” to
all general chemistry and organic chemistry students. In July 2001, Churchfield
received a Special Recognition Award from Dow for her on-campus activities,
which help attract the best talent available for the company. She also
has served on the Ferris State University Partnership for Career Decision-Making.
Scott
M. Mark is pharmacy operations manager and interim director of
pharmacy for Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
Mark is both past president and president-elect of the Washington Metropolitan
Society of Health-System Pharmacists and secretary of the Maryland Society
of Health-System Pharmacists. His many honors include the 2001 Bristol-Myers
Squibb Pharmacy Leadership Award. His development of a medication safety
program led to him being awarded the CNMC Patient Safety Award. Mark has
appeared on Washington-area radio and television as an expert on medication
safety. In addition to his other duties, Mark also is chairman of the
board for Nightingale Nursing Registry, a home-health-care business with
more than 100 employees.
