Distinguished Alumni

As president of Imperial Headwear Inc. since 1998, John C. Bond has overseen substantial gains in his Denver-based company’s sales and market share. In addition to his business successes, Bond finds time to help raise money for Colorado Special Olympics and Habitat for Humanity. His involvement in an annual golf tournament has helped raise more than $1 million for the Special Olympics since 1988. Bond also has been a strong supporter of the Professional Golf Management Learning Center at Katke Golf Course. The facility provides training opportunities for students and serves as a recreational resource for the entire community. During the past 12 years Bond has returned regularly to share his insights and experience with PGM students and is highly supportive of both the PGM and Ferris Alumni Associations.
Joseph J. Corcoran II has maintained close ties to Ferris State throughout his career. The vice president of operations for the F. P. Horak Company in Bay City, Mich., gives several guest lectures each semester, provides students opportunities to sharpen their interviewing skills and gives tours to student groups. He also is on the advisory boards of the Printing and Imaging Technology Management Department and the Technology Transfer Center. Corcoran is F. P. Horak’s coordinator for United Way of Bay County. He further combines his business and community interests by representing his company on the Alliance for Bay County Schools, helping to develop and administer a high-school job-shadowing program.
Jim Meyer joined Spartan Stores Inc. in 1973 as director of retail accounting. In 1989, he became the company’s senior vice president and chief financial officer. Today, Meyer is Spartan Stores chairman, president and chief executive officer. He has provided the vision for Spartan Stores’ re-entry into the retail supermarket business, growing its retail store base to 102 supermarkets and 25 deep discount combination food and drug stores with annual sales approaching $4 billion. Meyer also is deeply involved with his community, serving as board chair for Heart of West Michigan United Way and Davenport University, and as a member of the board of Employer’s Coalition for Healing Racism. An ardent supporter of Ferris, Meyer has also guided Spartan Stores to support the growing Ferris State University-Grand Rapids campus.
