Sall Takes Over as Men’s Basketball
Head Coach
The
Ferris State men’s basketball program tips off a new era in its
77-year history with the appointment of former assistant coach Bill Sall
as the program’s 11th head coach.
Sall,
who has served the past four seasons as the assistant men’s basketball
coach at Hillsdale College, was a unanimous choice of the five-member
search committee. Six finalists interviewed for the position vacated by
the Feb. 28 resignation of sixth-year head coach Edgar Wilson.
“We’re
extremely excited after an extensive search to name Bill Sall our new
head coach,” said Athletics Director Tom Kirinovic in announcing
the appointment. “He’s a proven winner who’s an outstanding
teacher of the game and comes in with a tremendous work ethic.”
In
four seasons at Hillsdale, the 34-year-old Sall has been instrumental
in leading the Chargers to a 72-41 overall record and two consecutive
NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional tournament appearances while being
involved with the administrative, recruiting and on-floor coaching aspects
of the program.
Prior
to his appointment at Hillsdale, Sall was the top assistant coach at Ferris
State for three seasons (1995-98) and spent the first year as an assistant
to head coach Tom Ludwig. During the 1995-96 campaign, he had the opportunity
to serve a portion of the season as the Bulldogs’ interim head coach.
“I’m excited about this opportunity and really believe in
this university,” Sall said. “With what they’ve done
in the past three years, it’s a new campus and a new atmosphere
that I think will allow us to attract quality student-athletes.”
Sall
himself was a standout player for the Calvin College Knights from 1985-1990.
A two-time MIAA Co-Most Valuable Player, Sall currently ranks as the Knights’
third-leading all-time scorer with 2,063 points, which included a 70-game
double-figure scoring streak. The 6-5 forward also grabbed 738 career
rebounds as Calvin captured three MIAA championships, earned four NCAA-III
tournament bids and advanced to the 1990 NCAA Division III Final Four.
He
graduated from Calvin in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in recreation
management.
