Educating Future Generations
Brudys' Gifts Establish Endowment Fund

Ferris State University students have additional scholarship opportunities thanks to the thoughtful generosity of Elmer (Pharmacy 1932) and Fern (Education 1929) Brudy of Brighton, formerly of Howell. The couple remembered the University in their wills and designated gifts to support the Alumni Association Scholarship Endowment which provides assistance to children of FSU alumni and to create the Elmer and Fern Brudy Memorial Academic Excellence in Pharmacy Scholarship Endowment Fund.

Mrs. Brudy's will states, "These gifts are made because Ferris State College was the first school to equip myself and my husband to meet the challenge of life with a useful skill." The Brudys recognized the importance of ensuring that future generations of students have access to the same high-quality educational experiences that helped them to achieve personal and professional success.

Elmer Brudy was part owner of the Gidley and Brudy Drug Store in Petoskey. After serving in World War II, he went on to earn a bachelor of arts degree from Central Michigan University and a D.D.S. from the University of Michigan Dental School.

Fern taught at the Boyne City Public Schools for several years.

Including Ferris State University in Your Will Is Easy
By Debra Jacks

FSU alumni and friends often ask how to make a charitable bequest to the University through their wills. It is a simple process that can be accomplished in three easy steps.

Step 1: Decide What to Give
Some alumni and friends give a specific dollar amount or property. Others choose to give a percentage of the residue of their estate. Residue is property left for the final beneficiaries named in a will after all other bequests have been paid. If all the residue is put in trust for the benefit of a family member such as a surviving spouse, Ferris State may be given all or a share of the trust remainder after that person's lifetime.

Step 2: Decide How to Give
Your charitable bequest can be designated to a specific area or activity of the University that is important to you, such as your program, your College or athletics. You can create a named endowed scholarship through your bequest with the scholarship bearing your name or the name of someone else important to you. An unrestricted bequest will permit the President and the Board of Trustees to use your support to take advantage of new opportunities for enhancing the University. Your bequest can be made in memory of someone you wish to honor. We will carry out your request and can suggest ways to grant your honoree appropriate recognition.

Step 3: Call Us
Contact us for a simple clause your attorney can add to your will or put in a codicil. A codicil is an addition or amendment to a person's will. We also will be happy to discuss your options with you as you consider how you wish to help Ferris. We encourage you to make your wishes known. Telling your heirs about your plans creates a greater understanding and appreciation of your reasons for including Ferris in your will. Advising the University of your plans will permit us to help you get the most satisfaction possible from your gift and enable us to show our gratitude for your generosity.
