The Second Mrs. Ferris
There are many who are unaware that Woodbridge Ferris had a second marriage. After Helen Ferris passed away in 1917, Mr. Ferris remained a bachelor until 1921, when he married Mary Ethel McCloud from Indianapolis, Indiana. She was decidely a socialite and many years his junior. It was to outsiders the indulgence of an older man, but perhaps Mr. Ferris felt that having a wife was important to his career as senator. His election to that post followed in 1922.
Residents of Big Rapids were not so accepting of the second Mrs. Ferris. They regarded her as ecentric and overbearing. In fact, she seemed to be very enamored with her status as a senator's wife, which was offensive to many Big Rapids citizens, who remembered the gentle and kind Helen.
