George Menoutes of Flint, retired pharmacist and civic leader, was appointed to an eight-year term and succeeds Fremont-area businessman and Ferris alumnus Louis J. Meeuwenberg whose term has expired after serving four years on the Board.
Menoutes, a 1951 graduate of Ferris' College of Pharmacy, recently retired as president of Hockstad Pharmacy Inc. after 45 years of practice, but remains active in the Michigan Pharmacists Association and the Genesee County Pharmaceutical Association.
"I'm honored and grateful for this opportunity to serve the University and give back to Ferris and the community and have been fortunate in my life and my career to be fulfilled by my chosen profession. I look forward to working with Dr. Eisler and the rest of the Board as well as all of the faculty and staff of Ferris State University," said Menoutes.
A 48-year resident of Flint Township, Menoutes has spent his adult lifetime working on behalf of state and local government. He has served as trustee of the charter township of Flint and as chairman of its Economic Development Corporation; member of the Flint Township Board of Appeals, the Flint Township Board of Review and the Genesee County Board of Commissioners; and served as vice chairman of the Bishop Airport Airpark Development Council, chair of the Flint Township Planning Commission, president of the Democratic 225 Club of Genesee County and vice chair of the Michigan State Board of Pharmacy for eight years.
He also has participated in many civic organizations including the Flint Institute of the Arts, the Flint Institute of Music, The University Club of Flint, the International Institute of Flint and as president of the Board of Trustees of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Flint.
While at Ferris, Menoutes served as class president and captain of the football team in 1950 and 1951 and was named to Who's Who Among Students. He has remained active in the Ferris State University Alumni Association and Bulldog athletics, is a President's Club member, and in 1989 was named Ferris' Distinguished Alumnus.
He and his wife Kathryn have three children, Alexis, Susan and Jamie, and six grandchildren.
