| Barry E. Stern, Ph.D.

Barry Stern is Director of the Center of Community Studies at Macomb Community College. Previously, he was Director of Policy and Planning for the Michigan Department of Career Development and before that served as U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Education, where he administered the $1.4 billion federal program in vocational-technical and adult education. His career has also spanned school and hospital administration, administration of employment-training programs, teaching, and public policy research and evaluation for the U.S. Secretaries of Labor and Education. Additionally, Dr. Stern is principal of a consulting firm that specializes in workforce development and industry-education partnerships. His clients have included agencies in several states and the U.S. foreign aid missions in Sri Lanka and Honduras. The Governor of California appointed him to the State Job Training Coordinating Council. He has written 60 published articles and editorials on technological education, school-to-work transition, school reform, worker retraining, skill and performance standards, educational and career information systems, and jail education. His Ph.D. is from Stanford University in Educational Planning and International Development.
