How much money should my son/daughter need for a typical week at Ferris?

For students living on-campus you can figure approximately $30 - $50 per week in spending money. That amount is calculated into the $19,000 in the next question.

How can I estimate the expenses my student and I will incur for the upcoming academic year?

Yearly expenses can be calculated by the following: tuition, room and board, books, supplies, and miscellaneous expenses. For the 2007-08 academic year the approximate cost for an in-state student living in on-campus housing and eating in the dining centers would be roughly $19,000 for two semesters.

Are on-campus banking facilities available?

Students wishing to open a new Huntington account may do so at the Student Service Center during summer orientation, or at the local Big Rapids Huntington Branch, activating the debit card features of a new Bulldog identification card. The new card allows students to receive student aid refunds electronically and to have direct deposit of their Ferris State University paychecks. Students also will benefit from a no-fee checking account, immediate access to financial aid refunds, full service ATM's operating 24 hours a day and the ability to complete banking transactions on-line through Huntington's Web bank. The card can be used at local merchants with debit-card capabilities. Future plans include the use of the ATM to sell tickets to campus events, and to transfer monies due on student accounts.

How are students billed for college costs?

Students have two options to pay their tuition & room and board charges at the beginning of the semester. Students can pay the full balance of the charges that are due approximately one week before classes begin each semester; or they can choose to pay 50% a week before classes, 25% by the middle of the month following the beginning semester, and the final 25% by the middle of the third month of the semester. (There is a $30 deferred payment charge for this option.) Students and their authorized users receive a monthly statement via E-bill. This statement would indicate charges they had for long distance phone service, special events or tuition charges.

In order to register for the next semester, the student’s account balance must be below $150.

How does my son/daughter pay a past due bill and get it credited quickly?

Any bill can be paid on-line via E-Bill. You may use your checking or savings account or credit card (Visa, Mastercard or Discover).  Simply click on the “Quick Links” drop down box on the FSU homepage and select “Payments Online/Ebill.” The payments will be credited to their account immediately.

Does Ferris have an account for my student where I can deposit money to help with on-campus expenses?

Currently students can put money on deposit on the Bulldog Card. Click for more information on the Bulldog Card.

Will the Business Office cash a check?

Checks can be cashed at the Timme Student Service Center for up to $100 providing the student account is paid up to date and they have not had checks presented to FSU that were returned unpaid. Only one check may be cashed per day.

What if I need cash fast but have no access to get it?

Student Services will extend a $50 cash loan to students providing they do not have a “current balance” due. A student must present a valid student ID card in order to receive the cash advance. Students may receive 3 cash advances a semester, but no more than once every thirty days.

Are there any charges/fees that are optional or that I could get reimbursed?

Yes, there are 4 refundable fees

  1. Health Center                   $47
  2. Racquet Facility                $13
  3. Student Activity               $20
  4. Student Government         $1

(Check refund schedule for the dates and locations where these fees can be removed.)

Is there any incentive to paying my tuition in full?

Yes, you will not be charge the $30 deferred payment fee. Your semester bill must be paid in full before the beginning of classes.

Will I be charged a late fee if my account is not paid in full?

Yes, a 2% late fee is assessed 2 times per semester for past due balances.

How will I receive a bill?

In an effort to become more paperless, FSU prints one paper bill per semester. This paper bill is mailed to the billing or permanent address listed on the student account. Any subsequent billing statements are only sent electronically, so encourage your student to set you up as an authorized user in Ebill. This would allow you to receive monthly emails regarding your student's tuition bill, as well as the ability for you to pay online using a checking or savings account or credit card.

How can I pay my bill?

You may mail a check or money order with your student's ID number in the memo line to our Business Operations for processing. The address is Business Operations, 1201 S. State St., CSS101PA, Big Rapids, MI 49307. You can also pay online via Ebill by debiting your checking or savings account or by using a credit card (Visa, Mastercard, or Discover). Payments by cash, credit card, check, or money order can be made in person at the Timme Center for Student Services or Kendall Student Services offices. Credit card payments at these offices must be made by the cardholder.
