Ferris State University requires all single students, living away from
home, to reside in University residence halls. The basis for
this is that the learning process is not confined to
the classroom. Educational experiences provided by living
in the residence halls are important to the personal growth
of the students.
Please be advised that the terms and conditions of the housing
contract are for the entire academic year.
Students who are not required to live on campus, yet voluntarily
sign the housing contract, will not be released from their
contractual obligations unless extreme and unusual circumstances
can be demonstrated. You are advised
to NOT sign an off-campus lease until you have received approval
from Housing/Residential Life.
In order to be eligible to live off campus,
a student must meet one of the following criteria:
- Be twenty (20) years of age before the first day of classes
in the semester for which they intend to live off campus.
- Or must qualify to commute. Commuting is approved for
students who verify their residence to be in the permanent
home of a parent or legal guardian within fifty (50) road
miles of the University. Those who are eligible to commute,
but chose to sign a contract, will be expected to fulfill
the terms of the contract.
If you do not meet any of the above criteria
your request to live off campus will be denied. If
you feel that there are extenuating circumstances and wish
to submit your request please contact the Housing Office at 231-591-3745
for further instructions.
Students who move out of the residence
hall without approval will be billed for room and board.
If you base your appeal on financial hardship, you will need
to provide evidence of the hardship to the Housing Office.
Generally, you will be asked to compose a letter to the Housing Office explaining your financial hardship. You must
demonstrate that dropping out of school is your only alternative
to solving your hardship and you must show that you
have exhausted ALL available resources: financial aid, grants,
loans, etc. You will be asked to provide tax forms and other
means of documentation to demonstrate your case. Your
desire to remain debt free and not obtain student loans is
NOT considered a financial hardship.
The following procedure must be followed:
- The student must obtain either a Request for Cancellation For Off Campus form (for students currently residing in campus housing or have signed a housing contract) or an Off Campus Application (for students who have not signed a housing contract). The required forms may be obtained at the Residential Life Office in Rankin Center 108 or at the Timme Center for Student Services.
- Include a letter regarding your financial hardship, detailing
your financial situation.
- Include with the letter a copy of the previous year's
income tax forms, both state and federal. (If a dependent student, parent taxes are also required).
- The Housing Office will review appeals
and provide a written decision to the student.
You may contact the Housing Office, at (231) 591-3745 or EMAIL at: housing@ferris.edu for further information or concerns regarding the appeal process.
Off Campus Housing Medical Appeals
If you base your off campus housing appeal on a medical condition, you will
need to have a physician verify that your condition requires accommodations
other than those that can be reasonably provided by Housing/Residential
Life. Also, copies of medical documentation from your physician
should be provided to support your appeal. Please contact the
Housing Office at 231-591-3745 for further instructions.
