Senate Diversity Committee Mission Statement


Mission
To promote diversity awareness and acceptance within the academic community in order to enhance student retention and prepare students for a diverse workforce.

Objectives
This committee shall:

  1. Explore and identify other diversity models or efforts at the university level for possible implementation at Ferris State University.
  2. Provide opportunities for faculty development through workshops, seminars, discussion groups, demonstration classrooms and conferences.
  3. Utilize the media, i.e., films, videos, cable television, newsprint and other promotional efforts to promote diversity awareness.
  4. Produce materials for publication in university newsletters.
  5. Establish a resource center and personal assistance to integrate diversity into courses and introduce diversity sensitive pedagogy.
  6. Coordinate with other diversity initiatives and efforts on the campus community.
  7. Create student focus groups to provide feedback to committee.

Committee
The committee shall consist of twelve voting members, one representative from each of the seven colleges, from the Counselor/Librarian unit, an at-large member chosen from all faculty, and two students. The students will be appointed by the Student Government Association. Representatives from other diversity campus organizations or activities will serve as ex-officio members. The committee shall elect the Chair.

Reporting Procedures
The Committee Chair shall submit all approved: minutes and reports to the Vice President of the Academic Senate.

Notes
Committee Bylaws will be established including term of membership and meeting structure.
