Dr. Peter Phillips is a Professor and Department Chair of Sociology at Sonoma State University. He is also Director of Project Censored. He frequently speaks on media censorship and various socio-political issues on radio and TV talk shows including Talk of America, Air America, Public Interest, World Radio Network, Democracy Now!, and the Jim Hightower Show. For the past thirty years, Project Censored has compiled an annual list of significant news stories which the major media are unwilling to cover. Project director and media watchdog Peter Phillips uses these stories to give a thoughtful presentation that focuses on building “media literacy” in a democratic society.

Philip Hosford

Philip Hosford is a pianist of international reputation, having toured throughout the United States, Europe, South America, Africa and Southeast Asia. Performance highlights include those at the Kennedy Center, Strathmore Center for the Arts, New York’s Lincoln Center, London’s Wigmore Hall, Teatro del Opera in Buenos Aires and Kolarec Narodni Hall in Belgrade. He is the winner 15 national and international piano competitions. He is a recipient of the Solo Performers Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and is currently performing as a member of the National Philharmonic Piano Trio. Mr. Hosford and his wife, Hayuru Taima founded the Academy of Music in Gaithersburg, Maryland which has a current enrollment of over 500 students.

Lazer Vaudeville combines high-tech laser magic with the traditional arts of vaudeville to create an original theatrical production. Complete with superlative juggling, black light illusion, acrobatics, zany comedy, and audience participation, Lazer Vaudeville offers clean, classy fun for the entire family. A cast of fantastical characters leads the audience on a journey through the imagination as a wizard creates magical illusions with laser beams, a neon cowboy kicks up a luminescent rope-spinning display, and an audience member escapes from a straitjacket.

Southpaw Isle Steelband

Southpaw Isle is dedicated to the performance of two of the world's most amazing melodic-percussion traditions: the Caribbean steel pan and the East African embaire. As a steel pan ensemble the group performs a varied repertoire of jazz, classical, and calypso compositions. At the recent World Steelband Festival in Trinidad they were rated one of the top eight steel pan ensembles in the world by Pan-Trinbago (the world governing body of steel pan). They were the only non-Caribbean ensemble to take part in the festival.

A Midwest-based music ensemble, Chicago Samba offers the authentic sounds of Brazil mixed with the flavor of carnaval. They play a unique mix of Brazilian popular song styles, including: Samba, Bossa Nova, Brazilian Jazz, Olodum, Forro, Chorinho, Pagode, Batucada, just like carnaval in Rio de Janeiro.

Remember to return on Sunday, April 13, at 1:00 p.m. for the International Festival, held in Dome Room at Rankin Center.

Tracey Bell first stepped into the spotlight with a Tina Turner impersonation that brought down the house! Since then she has performed thousands of one-woman shows for special events, corporations and dozens of charities. Star of the award-winning film Impersona, Bell has four times been nominated for the Canadian Event Industry's Entertainer of the Year Award; Bell won the award in 2005.
