Higher Learning Commission's Criteria for Accreditation

From the July 26-28, 2006 Workshop:

"Making a Difference in Student Learning"

At Ferris State University we are all committed to providing the best possible learning environment for our students so that they can acquire the skills and knowledge vital to their future. Assessment is a fundamental part of meeting this educational challenge. We recognize the need to continually modify and refine our assessment efforts as we examine our effectiveness at meeting our goals. A major indicator of our success at assessing student learning will be the quality of the self study we will conduct in preparation for the accreditation review by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). In preparation for the self study, we need to keep in mind the HLC criteria for accreditation.

HLC considers student learning and the assessment of student learning to be at the core of higher education, to be the fundamental responsibility of all parts of the institution. The link below will take you to the HLC website, specifically: Accreditation of Higher Education Institutions: An Overview, which provides brief general information about the accreditation of higher learning organizations by The Higher Learning Commission, identifies and responds to frequently asked questions about accreditation, and lists resources available from the Commission.

Accreditation of Higher Education Institutions: An Overview, 2003 Edition. Includes the new Criteria for Accreditation and Core Components effective January, 1, 2005.

Through the Criteria for Accreditation and multiple Core Components, the HLC makes clear the centrality of student learning to effective higher education organizations and extends and deepens its commitment to and expectations for assessment.
