Office of Student Conduct
System Guide
This is a simple guide to help you understand the basics of the FSU judicial process. If you have been charged with a violation, you should consult the Student Handbook for a detailed description of the judicial process. Please read both the handbook and this pamphlet before you meet with an Office of Student Conduct Officer. Please call the Office of Student Conduct if you have any questions.
Hearing Request Letter
You should receive a Hearing Request Letter which will list each policy violation for which you are charged. Be sure to refer to the Student Handbook for more information about the specific violations. This letter will also give you the date, time, and location of your hearing. It is your responsibility to contact the SJS Officer at least two (2) class days prior to the scheduled hearing if you cannot attend. Know that if you do not attend your hearing, the case may be adjudicated according to our judicial process without the benefit of a hearing.
The Hearing
This meeting is a way for you to discuss the event, allegations, and determine responsibility for the violations. The discussion at the hearing will be based on the Incident Report. SJS Officers may determine both responsibility and appropriate sanctions.
For those violations that are of a serious nature, like sexual assault, physical assault, or those cases involving suspension or dismissal, a student may be referred to a University Committee on Discipline (UCD) rather than a meeting with an individual SJS Officer. The UCD is a committee made up of one faculty member, one staff member and one student. The committee will hear the case, determine responsibility and determine sanctions if warranted. For more information about these processes, consult the Student Handbook.
The Appeal Process
You may appeal the outcome of a hearing by filing a notice of appeal with the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs. The notice must be in writing, not later than three (3) calendar days after the date of the written outcome of the hearing and meet one or more of the following criteria:
- failure by the SJS hearing officer or UCD to afford the student due process
and/or
- discovery of substantive new evidence.
