This list of essential (non-academic) functions of the CLS program are provided to prospective students so that you will be able to assess your own health and ability to complete the program successfully. You must be able to participate in course work, on and off the university campus, in ways that will not endanger yourself, students, faculty, patients, or others.
| Essential Function | Description |
| 1. (Essential) Vision/Observation Requirement | You must be able to read charts, graphs, instrument displays, and the printed word, on paper or computer monitor. You must be able to distinguish colors, and to interpret microscopic and macroscopic details. |
| 2. (Essential) Speech and hearing requirements | You must be able to communicate effectively and sensitively in English, providing and eliciting information. You must be able to assess non-verbal communication, and to transmit information to patients, colleagues, and other. |
| 3. (Essential) Motor Functions/Movement requirements | You must be able to move freely and safely around the laboratory and campus, and to travel to assigned sites for clinical experience. You must be able to reach work stations and storage areas. You must have the dexterity to manipulate tools, instruments, and equipment, including keyboards or other data input tools. You must be able to learn to collect appropriate clinical specimens safely and accurately. |
| 4. (Essential) Behavioral requirements | You must have the emotional health needed to use your intellectual abilities. You must be able to maintain calm under stressful conditions. You must recognize emergency situations and take appropriate actions. |
| 5. (Essential) Intellectual requirements | You must be able to read and understand textbooks, professional journals, and instruction manuals. You must be able to read and follow laboratory procedures. You must be able to apply what you have learned to laboratory situations and patient test results. |
At some point in the first year of the program you will be asked to sign a statement that you have read the material above and that you expect to be able to perform these functions. All reasonable accommodations will be made to help you succeed
