Roman Surveying Competition
at the
FIG/ACSM/ASPRS Conference

Washington, D.C.
2002

In 2002, the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping initiated their first annual student competition.  The theme for 2002 was Roman surveying.  Students were to make their own equipment, modeled after what the typical Roman surveyor would use. To the right is a picture of the Ferris students in regalia along with their professors and fellow classmates.

To the left is the same group with Lynn Fenn joining in for the picture.  Lynn is the wife of John Fenn, a long time friend and supporter of the Surveying Engineering Department at Ferris State.
While at the conference, these Ferris Roman surveyors got a chance to look at the state of the art of surveying in 2002.  In the background on the left is a global positioning system continuous operating station.  These surveyors felt sadness when they realized that their days of the groma are numbered.

The Roman Surveyors shown here are Charlie Langolf, Nick Jarret, Rocco Corsetti, Matt Morrison, Nate VanRaemdonck and Tim Platz.  Here they are checking out the competition and getting ready for their turn at the competition.
The following pictures show the Roman surveyors from Ferris State University hard at work. The contest was a lot of fun for the students and their participation at the conference strengthened their educational experiences.
