Developing Effective Lectures
Ideas for Teaching Large Lectures

Personalize the Course as Much as Possible:

  • Come in early and talk with students

  • Move about the room when lecturing to bring yourself closer to the students

  • Walk about the room when distributing handouts

  • Stay after class for questions and talk

  • Have students state their name each time they ask or answer a question until you have learned all the names

  • Choose a reasonable percentage of papers and tests to write comments on. Rotate the groups so all students receive some feedback

  • Have prepared comment note cards (sticky notes) with several different types of comments—e.g. Well thought out, clear and complete or I am not certain what you mean??

  • Use one minute paper for questions of comments—read a few before each class

  • Hold a brown bag lunch in a conference room once a week for questions or discussions

  • Use e-mail to make daily announcements and comments

 Active Learning Strategies:

  • Break up lecture by using small 2-3 person groups to write, discuss, summarize etc related to the lecture

  • Have students’ rise up and stretch at the mid-point of the lecture

  • Lecture with an end of class test every day—research has shown this to raise long term retention of course material

  • Have students prepare study question before lecture and then discuss them at the mid point of the lecture for 10 minutes

  • Have a Pandora’s Box in the class with discussion topics related to the lecture—pull one or two out at the mid point and have a 10 minute discussion

Teaching and Acting

  • Be animated

  • Role play

  • Dress up

  • Use visuals when ever possible

  • Dramatize problems

Collaboration

  • Assign students to note taking teams

  • Assign students a study partner (s)

  • Have students formulate group questions—this is less threatening sometimes

  • Give group quizzes

  • Use SLA
